What's better than having the God with us? According to Jesus, having God within us. Jesus came to cleanse us of our sin so that the Spirit could make us his home once again. As we walk by the Spirit, we experience the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Only in Emmanuel do we receive what our hearts long for: love, joy, peace, and ultimately God with us.

Heaven is not the end of the story. It is the culmination of the story. Before time was time and space was space, God had eternity in his mind. God, who has always been in a glorious relationship of love within himself, now invited his people into this great dance of God. Fully. Finally. Forever.

The steady theme of the Old Testament is God with us. He is with us in the garden, in slavery, in the wilderness, in the tabernacle, in the temple, in the exile, and in the silence. Nothing could stop God from being who he is: Emmanuel. In every pleasure and pain, God is with us.

God walked in the garden in the cool of the day "as was his custom." God's presence permeated the place he made for his people. And yet, humanity believed that our near God was actually distant. Instead of rejoicing in God with us, we reached to be our own gods. Even in this moment, God's immediate response was to make a promise for his presence to continue with us until it would find its home once more within us.

God created a place for his people to prosper with him. We call this space, "Eden." But the Garden of Eden is much more than a paradise. It is a place of potential and peace. It is where God's space and human space overlap together. It is what God desired, to be Emmanuel in the garden with us.

Before time was time and space was space, God was. In this glorious relationship of love between the Father, Son, and Spirit, God was thinking of a plan and a people. Creation is an invitation into the divine dance of God. This has been God's heart from before the beginning: to be Emmanuel.
