Matt reads G. Campbell Morgan's chapter on John the Apostle and stops to talk it through. Morgan starts with John's background: son of Zebedee and Salome, partner in the fishing business with Simon and Andrew, from a family with hired servants, a cousin of Jesus after the flesh (Matthew 27:55-56), and a man with a house in Jerusalem, where he took Mary after the cross (John 19:26-27).

Then Morgan follows John through the Gospels and turns to the Lord's methods with him: "What seek ye?" (John 1:38), the invitation to "come and see" (John 1:39), which Morgan ties to Revelation 1:1-2 where John "bare record ... of all things that he saw," the call to be fishers of men (Mark 1:17), the name Boanerges, sons of thunder (Mark 3:17), the sharp corrections ("Forbid him not," and the wish to call down fire, Luke 9:49-56), the way of the cross (Mark 10:38-39), and the confidence Jesus showed in trusting John with His mother and with the Revelation. It closes on John 21:20-23: "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?"

How does the Holy Spirit reveal Jesus Christ? A.W. Tozer's text is John 3:27 (KJV): "A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven."

Matt reads and discusses Tozer's sermon "How Christ Is Revealed by the Holy Spirit, Not Through the Intellect," chapter 2 of his ten sermons on the Holy Spirit. Tozer's outline: the blunder of orthodoxy in assuming spiritual truths can be intellectually perceived; the error that Bible study of itself can remove the veil; the error that we can talk each other up and put spiritual things down on the level of man's understanding; and the result, "two Christs": the Christ of history and the creeds, and the Christ only the Spirit can reveal.

Along the way: the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:14), God's thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9), the Spirit of truth glorifies Christ (John 16:12-14), all Scripture is given by inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16), intuition and inward illumination, why philosophy and science cannot prove divine things, "It is the Holy Spirit or darkness," the anointing that teaches you (1 John 2:27), and Tozer's promise that when the Spirit comes He does not throw out true learning; He sets it on fire.

What does Jesus mean by "take no thought for your life" in Matthew 6:24-34 (KJV)? Take no anxiety: seek the kingdom of God first, then work without worry.
Sermon on the Mount Pt 27, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.

Matthew 6:24 is the hinge of the chapter. Verses 19-24 warn against coveting abundance, and verses 25-34 warn against being anxious about necessities. Matt shows that "take no thought" means take no anxiety, the same word as "Be careful for nothing" in Philippians 4:6, and not "sit on your porch and wait for life to happen."

From there: losing your life to find it (Matthew 16:24-27), flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom (1 Corinthians 15:50-54), "If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31-39), render unto Caesar and unto God (Luke 20:19-26), "all souls are mine" (Ezekiel 18:4), Moses asking to be blotted out of God's book (Exodus 32:30-33), the book of life (Revelation 20:12-15), your children belong to God (Ezekiel 16:20-21), and Paul on Mars Hill (Acts 17:22-28).

Then back to the birds of the air, which never just sit around, the ant (Proverbs 6:6-11), Adam put in the garden "to dress it and to keep it" before the curse (Genesis 2:7-15), providing for your own house (1 Timothy 5:8), and "if any would not work, neither should he eat" (2 Thessalonians 3:10). The balance: work hard, plan and provide, without anxiety.

Tozer's point from Acts 2 is that the important thing at Pentecost was not that the Spirit had come but that Jesus had been exalted (Acts 2:32-33, 36). Jesus said it on the last great day of the feast: "the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified" (John 7:37-39). Where Jesus is glorified, the Holy Spirit comes. He does not have to be begged.

From there Tozer says the church must be more than "a heavenly institution being operated in an earthly manner." A Spirit-filled congregation is joyful (the Moravians), useful to the whole community, and "ensamples to all that believe" (1 Thessalonians 1:7-8). Who will not feel at home there: people who wear religion as a Sunday garment, who will not let the cross change their plans, who expect entertainment, or who want only the church's cultural value. Who will: those who want to be rid of their sin, want to know God, and know the Shepherd's voice. Sean Griffin of Kingdom in Context comes back for a two-hour walk through Revelation. He starts at Revelation 1:1, where the message runs from God, to Jesus Christ, to His angel, to John. Then the big question: Revelation is not one continuous sequence. Greek words like kai do not always mean "next," and Sean groups the chapters into overlapping sections that show the same events from different angles.

Who was Andrew the Apostle? In John 1:35-42 (KJV) Jesus asks him "What seek ye?", and G. Campbell Morgan shows why Andrew mattered more than most Christians realize.

Matt and Raven read G. Campbell Morgan's chapter on Andrew from The Great Physician. Morgan walks through the places Andrew is named: John 1:35-42, the call from the nets (Mark 1:16-18), the loaves and fishes (John 6:8-9), the Greeks who would see Jesus (John 12:20-22), the Mount of Olives (Mark 13:3-4), the upper room (Acts 1:13), and the foundations of the holy city (Revelation 21:14).

Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, a friend of John the Apostle, Simon's brother, and a strong, quiet man with the courage to leave John and follow Jesus. Jesus' first words to him were "What seek ye?" (John 1:38). Morgan says He was not asking who Andrew was looking for, but why. Andrew came and saw, abode with Him that day, and then "first findeth his own brother Simon" with the words "We have found the Messias" (John 1:41). Morgan closes on this: Christ's first disciple was not Peter but Andrew, and the city of God will be built not by the notoriety of its builders but by their fidelity.

Why did Abraham refuse the king of Sodom's riches? Matthew 6:22-24 (KJV): "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Abram would not let any man say, "I have made Abram rich."
Sermon on the Mount Pt 26, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.

Matt and TopLobsta trace "Ye cannot serve God and mammon" through the Bible. In Genesis 14 Abram arms his 318 trained servants and brings Lot back. Two kings meet him: Melchizedek blesses him and receives a tenth, and the king of Sodom offers the goods. Abram will not take "from a thread even to a shoelatchet ... lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich" (Genesis 14:23). The next chapter is God's covenant with Abram.

Elisha refuses Naaman's gifts ("I will receive none," 2 Kings 5:16) and Gehazi runs after them. Elijah asks, "How long halt ye between two opinions?" (1 Kings 18:21), and the line runs from Baal to mammon: could today's church run on God with no money? Then Simon the sorcerer ("Thy money perish with thee," Acts 8:20), Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11), and the unjust steward and "the true riches" (Luke 16:1-14).
