Space, is realy realy big and full of shakespeare references. Stardate S02E02 of Star Trek: Discovery we join the newly appointed Captain Christopher Pike and the crew as the race around the galaxy researching red flares in space. This episode as of its release felt the most like an episode of tos with a planet of the week and a few other elements that are explored.

In 2017 a new Star Trek hit streaming services around the world. For the first time in over a decade there would be new episodes of Trek playing in homes… but some Trek fans being fragile whiny man babies, it was met with mixed reviews and mean words. Behind the scenes things didn't go much better for Star Trek: Discovery. But at the very end of season one, the starship Enterprise and Captain Christopher Pike were teased.

In 2005 Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled, and for the first time in 18 years there was no Star Trek on TV. A few years earlier Star Trek the next generation had crashed and burned at the theater so there was no Trek in theaters, either. It was a dark time for Trekkies, but there was a glimmer of hope on the horizon.

When the commander and his crew arrive, they discover survivors and one of them, a beautiful young woman. But this planet hides a dangerous secret…we are of course discussing the 1956 classic Forbidden Planet. This week we are discussing the similarities between The Cage and Star Trek in general and Forbidden Planet.

After trying to sell Star Trek to various networks, NBC eventually ordered a pilot. They were not overly impressed with The Cage, finding it to be cerebral and confusing. After most of the characters were recast and a completely new story written, they ordered a second pilot, which would become what we now know as the first episode of Star Trek. Later, in season one, The Cage was cut up and reused to make the only two part episode in the original series, The Menagerie.

After poking around the Memory Alpha wiki, we stumbled on to the Star Trek Is... document that Gene Roddenberry used to pitch Star Trek. Reading through, it seemed like good episode fodder, because it touched on some stuff that Jeremy wanted to talk about when he first pitched the show to Chris. Since this is the document that basically sets up the entire franchise, it's still relevant, even for a Captain Pike heavy show.
