By referring to wives as the weaker vessel Peter was not saying wives are inferior to husbands. Yet, this was a common belief in Peter’s Day. Roman legal system assumed women to be weak and incapable of making sound decisions on their own.
This was primarily due to the influence of Aristotle (GreeK philosopher), who argued, women were by nature inferior to men in every way, except sexually. (Background Commentary O.T.)
Men and women are different, anatomically men have greater muscle mass than women. But that doesn’t mean women are inferior. Peter was referring to the social status of wives. Women were not honored, socially. Peter is calling Christian husbands to show honor toward their wives in public, due to their social disadvantage.
