An early reader for kids who love science!
There is a dearth of really good chapter books for kids who like science, but are not particularly into animals, as my older son was at that age. After the COMMANDER TOAD series and NATE THE GREAT, what do you read?
Kell the Alien fits the bill. With a heavy dose of humor and whimsy and delightful world-building, Darcy Pattison has created a series that would especially appeal to kids into science or outer space.
I loved how many incredible details were woven into this book, despite its simple use of language (just right for early readers). Aliens aren't born, they hatch, so Kell is afraid of eggs and won't eat food with eggs in it. Thus, eating birthday cake is problematic. His skin peels once a month, which is quite embarrassing. He prefers replicator food. All this must be hidden from Mrs. Lynx, the principal, who's an alien-hunter. Kell is also afraid of bugs (there are no bugs on his planet). Watch for the illustrations of bugs--and the game at the end. There are many misunderstandings between Earthlings and aliens. The premise of Kell helping his parents make money by planning an alien birthday party was just right in intensity for this age group. Such a wonderful, charming book.
I just wish it had come out a few years ago!
COOL KIDS STORY
Kell and his parents were definitely aliens, but he could not let his friends at school or any one know. He came up with a brilliant idea to help his parents but on the heel of that, he had to face his principal who wanted to catch an alien and thought that everyone in the third grade could be one. Kellâs life was no bed of roses, he had to be so watchful and mindful of others, it made his life an exciting and fun one in ways he couldnât understand. This story has lots of amusing episodes which made you smile, great job, cool writing.
Great story for kids who like science
Kell and the Giants is an enjoyable read, particularly for children who enjoy science, astronomy and cute humor. The story is well-written and funny, and it's complimented by cute little drawings throughout the text. The story also explores common problems that kids face every day, such as being presented with food choices that they can't, or won't eat for one reason or another, keeping secrets, understanding an unfamiliar culture and handling the logistics of an alien birthday party. This one is definitely going into the "read again" space on the bookshelf!
A nice little early reading SciFi.
I adored this story and the illustrations. I love aliens, so it was an easy choice for me when thinking about ebooks to download for the kids I babysit.
