    Publisher's Summary:
The death of a child is that unimaginable loss no parent ever expects to face. In Beyond Tears, nine mothers share their individual stories of how to survive in the darkest hour. They candidly share with other bereaved parents what to expect in the first year and long beyond:
There simply is no answer to the question "why?" This sharing in itself is a catharsis, and because each of these mothers lost her child at least seven years before, she is in a unique position to provide perspective on what newly bereaved parents can expect to feel. The mothers of Beyond Tears offer reassurance that the clouds of grief do lessen with time and that grieving parents will find a way to live and even laugh again.
The full list of contributors includes Madelaine Perri Kasden, Phyllis Levine, Ariella Long, Rita Volpe, and Ellen Mitchell.

    Comforting and familiar
My daughter died 25 days ago. I feel like this book could have been written by me because the emotions the women who wrote the book went through are exactly what I am going through. It is comforting to know that my grief is "normal" and that I'm not losing my mind. I have read several grief books. Beyond Tears is by far the best. Thank you!
    Exactly what I needed
It felt as if they knew exactly what Im going through as though they were in my thoughts and mind. Listening to it for a second time.

Summary and Analysis of Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
    Preview:
In his book Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman looks at and explains the choices and errors in judgment people make over a span of time. He presents the key findings of his research on intuitive statistics. Both Kahneman and his colleague and close friend Amos Tversky find that human intuition was lacking - judgments are biased and people are willing to believe in inadequate evidence based on few observations.

    Great synopsis of each chapter
Helpful summary of key points from each chapter
    Thinking Fast and Slow... Explained...
This recently published eBook, Thinking Fast and Slow from author Daniel Kahneman convincingly explains what influenced people's way of choosing one thing over the other. The underlying circumstances they arrived at and made them see that said decisions are the most ideal and that they were only acting on what they deemed best given that kind of situation. But along with author's findings, he points out the biases that go along with it but many of us are just too afraid to admit. This eBook is an eye-opener to those who would want to validate certain questions that we were afraid to ask ourselves on just what makes us tick. Kudos to the author for having the objectivity to show a truth that has long been suppressed and to be able to share it with others is equally inspiring as well. CHEERS!!!
Good summary but not a light read
The book is a good summary but not a light read. Some of the summaries are pretty intense.
I think that a better approach may have been to have an example / story for each summary.
These would have been more illustrative and rememberable.
    Good synopsis of the full-text.
I have the full text and appreciate this summary, too.
while good, it is on the knife edge of being ...
I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because, while good, it is on the knife edge of being too brief. It otherwise does a good job of outlining the major points in the book.

    Narrator: Lori L. Parker
    Format: Unabridged

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-10-16
    Publisher: Benchmark Publishing Group
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Self Development, Motivation & Inspiration
    Publisher's Summary:
This book will take many of the current beliefs you have stored in your mind and question them. It will confuse you in a way that will force you to think outside of the box. You cannot master your own mind if the majority of your thoughts are based on those of society and not any of the ideas or facts that you've created on your own. If you are not the master of your own mind, you are a zombie. You live the repetitive life of society and are stuck in a comfort zone that is probably not even all that comfortable.
It's time for you to think a bit differently, to master your own mind and be your own greatest leader. This book will address the many things that affect the way that you think. It will explain how thinking is where it all begins. Your successes and failures, happiness and hurts, the hesitation, procrastination, and motivation all begin within your own mind.

    Amazingly Insightful
I just finished reading the book and I am so excited about it that I didn't want to wait 48 hours to submit a review on my own account so I am using my husband's account. I work with higher level of care foster children and I wish I could purchase a copy for each and every one of them. The kiddos I work with have experienced the worst forms of abuse and neglect at the hands of the ones who were supposed to care for them and protect them without question. As I read this book I was thinking about the kids I have worked with either within the agency or the ones I have personally fostered and I was able to apply multiple sections of the book to each and every one of them. Often times these babies are so affected by their parents actions that their mental and emotional development is stunted. They are completely working with their survival brain and need the very guidance offered in this book in order to place their feet on solid ground and move forward to a successful life despite the chaos that was offered them.
Sonia's honesty challenges the reader in a sincere and safe way. This book can be read and understand by people from many different educational backgrounds because she writes in an easy and clear format that doesn't intimidate the reader. I truly believe this needs to be required reading material for foster children, biological parents, foster parents, PSR and BST care providers, therapists, those in recovery, and anyone else who is participating in some type of treatment or counseling program. The issues discussed affect all of us at one point or another in our lives, but especially those I mentioned above. I plan on purchasing copies for several of my co-workers and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Excellent job Sonia!

    A Must Read
Anyone who dares to think differently, who challenges themselves to question everything, who thinks for themselves or who strives to do any of these must read this book. Sonia Olivia Williams, the author of Mastering The Mind By Mixing It Up: The Key To Becoming Your Own Greatest Leader, puts in writing what so many fail to do and that is simply to think for yourself without any influences from others. This book in innovative, its risky and its brilliant. Do yourself a favor and read this book, I guarantee you will not be able to put it down.
    Breath taking.

    Very good read
Karen Wyatt is a particular favorite of mine. This book was a very good read for hospice chaplains and those who serve in those areas.
    Stories to Live By
I have been reading books on the subject of death and dying ever since the 60s when Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross broke the silence about a topic Americans have a hard time discussing. Karen Wyatt's book, "What Really Matters, 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying" left me mesmerized, thoughtful and reflective. ( Full disclosure, as they say on TV: my sister, Jeanne McCafferty, edited Karen's book and it was through her that I came to read it, for which I am grateful!)
For those of us interested in living life more consciously, the wisdom of those who have reached the end of the road is precious to us who may have more time. I found the stories Karen chose to tell riveting and I especially appreciated her own self reflections on what she was going through with particular people at different times.
Karen's patients were blessed to have her as their physician at the end of life and we are blessed to have this book as we wend our own way down the road.
    Death is the greatest lesson
This book is one I will return to time and time again. Its rich tapestry of stories and lessons feels like a whole education in death and dying. The author uses compelling vignettes from her varied experience in hospice care and profiles real people who were some of her greatest teachers. I love this book for its structure, language, symmetry and content. You will laugh and cry and have several aha moments as you proceed from one chapter to the next. As a hospice volunteer, I feel the truth in the author's words and her authenticity shines through on every page. A wonderful gift to us all, this book deserves a place on every seeker's bookshelf.
    What Really Matters
This is a very important book for people with serious diseases and their caregivers. As the wife of a man with terminal cancer, I highly recommend it.
    Interesting and practical
I enjoyed reading the book and the depth of many thoughts. Especially there are valuable and helpful hints about what it means to live in the NOW. I do not like that Bible quotations with questionable interpretations are linked to otherwise valuable information. This may irritate people who have different religious opinions.

  • Finding Freedom in Illness Audiobook by Peter Fernando

    Title: Finding Freedom in Illness
Subtitle: A Guide to Cultivating Deep Well-Being Through Mindfulness and Self-Compassion
    Author: Peter Fernando
    Narrator: Roger Clark
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-19-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Self Development, Motivation & Inspiration
    Publisher's Summary:
Buddhist wisdom for finding freedom and insight through spiritual practice in the midst of illness and pain.
"Let your illness be your spiritual teacher!"
Make a statement like that to someone who's struggled for years with, say, rheumatoid arthritis, and be prepared for an eye roll (at best). To Peter Fernando's credit, he makes that statement, and no such impulse arises. We believe him because he's been there himself and because he backs up the statements with his own real experiences and with real wisdom from Buddhist teachings. Peter starts by defusing the pernicious belief that anyone is somehow responsible for their illness: You're not "wrong" for being sick. Then, having gotten past self-blame, one can begin to learn self-kindness.
From there one moves to mindfulness practices and cultivating body awareness - even if body awareness is distasteful when the body isn't behaving the way you like. Further topics include getting intimate with dark emotions (fear, despair, the scary future, frustration, grief, etc.), learning equanimity (rejoicing in the good fortune of those who don't share your suffering), cultivating healthy relationships in the midst of everything, and practical advice for living with pain. Each chapter comes with one or more practices or guided meditations for putting the teachings into practice.

    Great book, wrong narrator
This is the best book Ive read on living life with a chronic illness. The author really goes in-depth with the challenges that long-term illness brings up in ones emotional, psychological and spiritual life. Experience with meditation definitely helps one to understand the content of this book.
The narrator is wonderful but, I feel, not the right narrator for this book. His voice is regal and dramatic. He is a very good narrator for a different type of book. My opinion is that this book would have been better with a more neutral voice and intonation. Personally, I found this mismatch distracting but it is still really worth listening to this book!
