My friend Melodi reminded me that its ok to not be ok, and that sometimes you need to write yourself a permission slip to just chill out and stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone handles things differently, and we are all dealing with Coronavirus the best way we know how. So give yourself a permission slip to take this day by day.

This episode is all about self-care during the Coronavirus.
If you’re like me you might find it difficult to find time to take care of yourself when there's so much happening in the world; but, by taking care of yourself it gives you more energy and mental space to help others.
If you’re needing some additional support, check out my podcast episode 13 where I interview licensed marriage and family therapist K’hara McKinney. If you’re in the Los Angeles area K’hara is an awesome therapist who can help, and recommends also looking into affordable therapists on Open Path, https://openpathcollective.org/.

Brisa is a survivor of pons stroke and locked in syndrome. Essentially what that means is after her stroke, at the young age of 32, she was mentally present, but she could not physically move or speak. She overcame the odds and gained back full physical mobility and speech by what Brisa describes as “pinky moves”. Her story is an inspiration and worth listening to. Her new book Pinky Moves is currently being edited but you can connect with Brisa and get a free gift by going to pinkymoves.com

Chris Taylor, Standford graduate and middle school teacher, speaks to how his school is coping with COVID-19 and addresses the issues this has caused his students and the community. He speaks to how the main concern he’s hearing about is not about getting sick, but rather about loosing housing, losing jobs, not being able to buy groceries.
Chris also speaks to the importance of mental health awareness and says the following during this interview:
“We know the new frontier of education right now is looking at how trauma and unaddressed mental health illness is a big part of what we see in achievement gap or the opportunity gap, or education gap… and part of the reason for that is because we know from brain science that it's a part of the brain that sort of processes, emotions and sort of get stuck in trauma, which is called the limbic system. When that's engaged, the prefrontal cortex can't do what it's supposed to do, which is picking up new information and learning… And I think [mental health] needs to be seen as more of an integral part of the educational system as opposed to just sort of this separate realm.” - Chris Taylor

In this episode Mike Rust explains what goes on in ambulances, how he and his Paramedic partner are working through the COVID-19 pandemic, and what its like to be a dad during this crazy time. He also clears up some myths about ambulances which I personally really appreciated and was fascinated by.

Worried about COVID-19? In this podcast I interview Becca Rust, a nurse in the intensive care unit who provides insights into what to do right now during this pandemic. She’s also a mom and awesome human being and talks about how she and her husband Mike are talking to their kids about what’s going on in the world and why its important to keep social distancing out of kindness and respect towards others, and not out of fear. In Becca’s own words “if you can quarantine not out of fear and not out of hysteria and panic, but quarantine out of respect, that's just a huge selfless decision that everybody should feel really proud of themselves for.”

I went on a hike today after being hunkered down in my apartment due to COVID-19, when I stumbled across a firefighter station and got to meet Scot Hopkins, an awesome Firefighter Paramedic who's working to better the COVID-19 pandemic by serving residents in the southern California area. I had to make a quick video to highlight this awesome human being and share with you! What’s the deal with therapy? And no, this is not a Seinfeld-esque joke :)
In this episode I speak with K’hara McKinney, a licensed marriage and family therapist who speaks openly about why she decided to become a therapist and the positive benefits that come from therapy.
She also offers insights into how to find a therapist if you would like to see one.
If you’re looking for a therapist and are in the Los Angeles, CA area I highly recommend connecting with K’hara. See her full profile on Psychology Today here
Another good resource K’hara recommends for finding a therapist, especially if you’re on a budget, is is to search for someone on Open Path
I hope if you’re on the fence about therapy this conversation helps you see the positive and beneficial impact therapy has! I know I love it and recommend that everyone I know see a therapist, even if you think you don’t need one.
