Our third and final part of the Back to the Basics series covers sport psychology, mindset, and mental conditioning.
This area is often overlooked especially in the beginning stages of an athlete's career. Are you aware of your strengths and weaknesses? While you are still growing as an individual, it's never too early to become self-aware of what you thrive at and where you may need some work.
Do you also know where you are heading? What your ultimate vision is? The path to greatness is long enough but if you don't know which path you are heading down, it will be even longer.
Finally, once those two aspects are in place, understand the concept of progress over perfection. This is the key to lasting peak performance.
Enjoy the episode and please let us know if you enjoyed this series and what other series we can bring to you!

We are back for the second part of our three-part series covering the basics of sport performance. This week, we dive into topics covering nutrition.
Nutrition is incredibly complex so we wanted to bring you a 30,000-foot view and get you started on what you should first be implementing in your life if you want to be successful with your nutrition.
That means assessing what you are currently consuming (a food journal is perfect for this) and then assessing what your goals are within your sport or life. Are you training for aesthetics, performance, or overall general health?
These 3 different avenues will look vastly different when it comes to strictness and adherence to a specific diet. But first, you must know what you are consuming currently so you can adjust.
We also dive into our personal experiences growing up and what we ate, nutrition issues currently going on, and cover what youth athletes should be focusing on.

This is our first ever mini-series on the podcast and we wanted to start from the beginning. Literally. While going back the basics may not be sexy, to lift heavy, get shredded, and dominating mentally takes consistent action and that starts with the basics.
Coach Aaron headlines this episode describing what he believes are a few mistakes athletes and individuals make in their strength training and conditioning. He also ends with advice for any strength and conditioning coach just starting out.

One of the most fundamental components of a successful team is the relationship between the head coach and his or her other coaches. Not just his or her assistant coaches, but anyone who spends time making the athlete better needs to be on the same page as the leader of the team. If there is a disconnect, the athlete will suffer because of what Strength and Conditioning and Sport Psychology can specifically give an athlete is vital to their performance and wellbeing.
No matter the sport, an athlete will benefit from becoming stronger, better conditioned, and more mobile to avoid injury. They also need mental conditioning. Yogi Berra's famous quote: "Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical."
To serve athletes in the best way possible, specialty coaches need to be on the same page as the head coach. We want to share with you how to do that, our perceptions of what we provide to athletes, and specific examples to illustrate exactly what we are discussing.

Fred, a fictional 1986 character, inspired this episode. Fred is stuck in his own ways. Fred doesn't adapt to his surroundings or his co-workers he depends on. Don't be a Fred.
Today's episode centers around how to hire and foster a positive culture in your performance staff (or any staff for that matter). Outwardly, this may seem like a rudimentary and boring topic. Who you surround yourself with and how you assess the performance of your staff is vital to your customers, your revenue and profit, and your sanity as well.
We discuss the hiring process, what to look for in interviews, how to deal with shit talk in the workplace, and where you need to first begin in order to hire effectively (spoiler alert, it starts with you).

Whoever invented the participation trophy, this episode is dedicated to you. We have no idea what you were thinking when you created them and we are here to destroy them. Figuratively. Literally would take too much time.
Understand that a participation trophy should be a reminder. When you look at it, I'm sure you feel no pride or any sort of positive emotion towards it. That is because you didn't EARN it.
Coach Aaron and Coach Kyle break down that nothing is given, only earned. We also discuss how to coach with intensity, how to receive that intensity from coach, and give you tactical advice you can use today to better your efforts.

Today, we are talking about equipment. Thank Alvin Kamara and Dr. Reef Fitness for this one. Sometimes (a lot of the time) equipment is made and utilized for this flashiness (quite literally in one instance). While they are fun to use and look cool, it's important to understand that alternatives can be used to accomplish the same goal. Coach Kyle asks Coach Aaron about many of the popular pieces of equipment in today's strength and conditioning world.

Discipline is foundational for success in any field. No argument there. However, too much discipline can lead to adverse results, especially in the coaching realm. Athletes are human beings. Coaches need to understand that athletes are not robots. They have lives, emotions, and the same struggles everyone has. While results are the objective, getting to those results can vary vastly. We break down our thoughts on the article and use examples from both the Strength and Conditioning and Sport Psychology realm and give you practical examples of how to have productive discipline.
