We as human beings are not only social animals, we are also consensus builders. In order to be social, we have to want to avoid conflict and promote harmony. If you think about it from an evolutionary standpoint, conflict is ultimately non-productive. An organism that is in constant conflict with the environment around it is, by definition, not appropriate for that environment. Furthermore, if you don’t find ways to fit into the environment that you find yourself in, you’re going to lose out to another organism that has found ways to make the environment its home.

We are social animals. The vast majority of us need the company of others in order to function and feel fulfilled. That’s why nearly everything that we do is built on a social framework. We play in groups. Nearly all our games and sports require multiple people being involved. We work in groups. Nearly all of our jobs are performed as a member of a team or a group. We learn in groups. From grade school to graduate school we are educated together in class and in classes.

Confidence is very liberating. When you have it, you quit worrying about what everyone else is thinking about you and that no one is constantly looking over your shoulder all the time and noting each failure. You’ll pay less attention to criticism and more attention to the words and actions that are going to get you where you want to be.

It’s only human to feel some doubts and fears when you begin to spread your confidence wings. Some days your confidence may simply seem fragile and feel as if the least little thing can set you back to withdraw and make you fall from the success ladder. The last step in gaining confidence in yourself is to seek the experience you need for the goals you want to reach. If you want to be a doctor, you must set goals for medical school, residency, and setting up your private practice. If you desire to become a writer, you must write! Write for money or for yourself, but spend some time honing your craft.

Confidence involves revamping your image to reveal the type of person and personality you want to become. A fashion designer may be able to get away with more “abstract” clothing and hair styles than the CEO of a very conservative company. After you know where your confidence level is on the chart of presenting the correct image, you can change some things. Take a close look at people you admire and want to emulate and pay attention to their body language and other areas of how they present themselves and strive to revamp your image accordingly.

You won’t get anywhere with new found confidence if you’re not assertive. Assertiveness will take you to the next level of confidence and help you get your feet wet in the confidence arena. As you build your confidence to new heights, you’ll feel less frightened and have fewer doubts about expressing yourself. Your negative self talk can become a thing of the past if you learn this important step to confidence.

Once you’ve assessed your confidence level, it’s time to learn how to prepare for the challenges ahead that you’re sure to face in your confidence journey. You don’t have to be preparing for the Olympics to realize the need for preparation and organization before facing challenges.
