  • EP 108 “No One Was Going to Save Me Except Me.” Overcoming Narcissistic Abuse with Dana S. Diaz

Today’s episode is an honest and poignant interview with author and abuse survivor Dana S. Diaz. Dana spent most of her life in abusive relationships, first as a child and then as a wife to a narcissistic husband for 25 years. Now at 48, she lives on her terms, happily remarried, and shares her story of hope and reclamation.

Dana’s story is extreme, but the reality is many people have been in similar situations, and she shares a lot of truly powerful ways in which we can all take agency in our own lives. When it comes to caring for ourselves, she reminds us to do what makes us happy, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. Wear lipstick, paint your nails, or even wear a fancy dress you never get to wear if that makes you happy. Ask yourself “What do I want?”

When it comes to stroking our partners,  Dana says it’s all about “extraordinary respect and kindness”. If there is respect in the relationship then you can discuss your differences and make positive change.  Always show appreciation even for things that seem commonplace, and remember that marriage means you are a part of a team so take care of each other.

Finally, when it comes to friendships, Dana says that “who you surround yourself with greatly affects your self-worth and confidence.” So surround yourself with positive-minded people who add value to your life, so look for friends who are moving forward. Her closing advice,

“Remember that your words have an impact, not just your words to your spouse and your kids and your friends and your coworkers. But how you talk to yourself! … Talk to yourself like you would talk to somebody that you love.”

    About Dana:

Dana S. Diaz is a wife, mother, and author of the best-selling book GASPING FOR AIR: THE STRANGLEHOLD OF NARCISSISTIC ABUSE. Dana has had life-long experience with narcissistic abuse, beginning in childhood. Her education in journalism and psychology at DePaul University in Chicago gave her the ability to accurately verbalize and express how narcissistic abuse creates confusion and conflict within victims, so that she can help other victims know they are not alone and better understand their own circumstances. Today, Dana is a proud voice for fellow victims who are unable, afraid, or ashamed to share their experiences. She strives to create awareness and understanding to ensure victims are given the support they need to first understand their situation and then begin the healing process. Her first book, chronicling her own abusive marriage that lasted nearly three decades, started as a journal that she hid under the couch cushion in the basement.

  • EP 106 Love Yourself First with Relationship Coach Jeanell Greene

In this episode, Jenny interviews Jeanelle Green, a relationship coach and marriage expert.  Jeanell shares her personal story of how childhood experiences shaped her relationships and the importance of forgiveness and healing. She emphasizes the need to love oneself first and offers coaching and support for personal growth. She provides some practical tips for enhancing marriages and emphasizes the importance of understanding and meeting each other's needs. She also encourages listeners to take ownership of their lives and live according to their values. Overall, the conversation provides valuable insights and guidance for creating and maintaining healthy and fulfilling relationships.

    Takeaways

Childhood experiences can have a significant impact on our relationships as adults.

Forgiveness and healing are powerful tools for personal growth and improving relationships.

Loving oneself is essential for happiness and fulfillment in relationships.

Coaching and support can provide guidance and accountability for personal growth.

    About Jeanell Greene

I am a passionate, no BS Relationship coach and speaker who loves to get deep, vulnerable, and intimate conversations. I am a Certified Life and Relationship coach and work with both couples and individuals to find more power, freedom, and joy in life, especially within the family. I love talking about love and forgiveness as my parents separated when my dad cheated on my mom and had a child and left us. With faith, my dad returned home and my mom forgave, but I later discovered there was still trauma I had to deal with. My life took a huge turn when I was going through divorce as a Filipino/catholic, which was what led me to do the inner work to heal myself. I love sharing how I was able to get responsible for my behavior and release my ex-husband with no malice or trauma and as a result, only spent $80 for our divorce papers. I got my calling when I turned 40. I left my Job in Corporate Sales being top of the pack making $130k to pursue my passion of helping people heal and now creating the relationship and vocation of my dreams. I love talking about mindset, integrity, breaking the rules, entrepreneurship rollercoaster, forgiveness, fear, love, infidelity, family, the importance of goals, and knowing your core values and purpose in this lifetime. I also love talking about the crazy stories of my life like when I met the Queen of England, almost got arrested, and landed on the front page of a newspaper when I was 6 years old, and how that 6-year-old is who I want to be when I grow up.

  • EP 105 “You Have to Know What You Want.” Finding clarity with Limor Bergman Gross.

Limor Bergman Gross is a former Director of Engineering with over 20 years of experience in the tech industry as an engineering leader, now she is an executive coach for women in tech leadership.

Today's episode is perfect for mothers and wives, individuals looking to start their own businesses or any business professionals.

As a mom of four, she had to make the conscious decision to start putting herself first and reclaiming her life. This meant doing things she had wanted but had been unable to do before. She became vegan even though it meant preparing two separate meals and learned to enjoy running.

“Going to the gym is my psychologist… for me what really helps me de-stress, think clearly, gain my confidence, all of the above is working out.”

All of these personal life changes led to the confidence to quit her job and start her own business, even though she didn’t have a clear business plan yet.

“It's important to have the mindset that maybe you don't know all the answers, and that's okay. Don't worry too much about that. …sometimes we just need to know what we want set goals and not worry too much about the how. Because the how can get in the way.”

She reminds us we have to be “very resilient as a business owner...be patient. Take a small step forward and realize that eventually, it will happen.”

When it comes to stroking our spouses Limor’s advice is to “be the best spouse that you can.” She shared how when she was frustrated and ready to throw in the towel with her business it was her husband who believed in her and encouraged her to keep going.

When it comes to the professional setting Limor advises “In order to lead well, you need to adjust your leadership style based on the individuals that work with you.” She shares advice on how to convey your message effectively even when working with people with different priorities and personalities and shares the first bit of coaching she does with her clients, finding clarity.

In closing, she reminds us to “believe in [ourselves], and live the life [we] deserve.”

Limor Bergman Gross is a former Director of Engineering at DigitalOcean with over 20 years of
experience in the tech industry as an engineering leader.
She is now an executive coach for women in tech leadership who want to achieve more through a result-oriented coaching process.
Women she works with say Limor enabled them to tear down ceilings by challenging them to think bigger.
They also say she opened their eyes to a new way of contributing to their careers.
Limor also runs group coaching for women in leadership as well as workshops on topics such as:

    • Presentation skills and storytelling
    • Leadership and career progression
    • Persuasion, Negotiation, and Communication Excellence

Limor loves talking about career progression in the tech industry and how to build your brand in the company and externally.

  • EP 103 Seeking and Stroking with JJ DiGeronimo

In today's podcast, I sit down with author, business professional, wife, and mom JJ DiGeronimo. Our conversation will especially benefit all of the type A personalities out there, the moms trying to juggle it all and those who are seeking answers and looking to find their role in this world.

If you’re looking for quick tips to apply today,  JJ recommends “turning your phone into an educational device.” Stop the mindless scrolling and use it as a tool not entertainment.

JJ encourages us to think about our money differently too.

“I feel like my money has a frequency or an energy and it's all about using it to empower more women because that's usually who I’m hiring.”

The most important piece of advice, “take a mindfulness course.” She shares her personal struggles to let go of her Type A persona and turn down her inner monologue. It took multiple sessions.  But after investing that time and money she started to understand how she was moving through her life.

“I think that we think we're in control when we're in this mindset of go, but actually we have a complete lack of control.”

Which tends to send us reeling between trying to do it all and realizing there is still so much out of our control.

“There's so much to do. And really all the universe is asking of us is to lean into one step today, one step.”

Her mindfulness journey had her “questioning one's existence and how you're participating in the world” leading her to write her third and most recent book, Seeking.

Her closing piece of advice is, “Ask yourself, where am I going to focus my energy?”

So, where are you going to focus your energy? If you were to treat your energy like currency how would you spend it? What would you attract?

  • EP 101 “Why Would You Wait for Something Terrible to Happen in Your Life to Start Living?”- Adventurer Kaylee Johnson

It’s our 100th Episode and the end of season 1 so today's show is truly special. This episode is Highly recommended for individuals looking to make a major life change, business owners, middle managers, or anyone in a relationship.

On today's episode, I caught up with my friend, Kaylee Johnson. Kaylee managed my business, Music Compound for several years before heading off to hike the Appalachian trail in 2022.  We start with a conversation about embarking on a life-altering adventure. Last year, Kaylee and her now husband, Jared decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. I asked what went into making that choice and some of the challenges they faced. Kaylee shares that there can be a lot of concern over leaving your career when you are just starting to build it.

After all, “What type of person can just take six months off” but  “Six months is just a blip. In five years, you're not gonna remember what you did for any basic six-month stretch of time unless you go hike the AT or do something big.” Kaylee shared some lessons from the trail. Including how she learned happiness is the result of time spent well with people you love, and how living simply can allow you the freedom to shift your priorities even in the ‘post-trail-real-world’.  She offers great advice for anyone looking to embark on a new lifestyle including how to quit your job, what kind of money something like this costs, and what questions you need to ask yourself before making that kind of change.

We then talk about our time working together, and how employers and employees can work together to build a creative, lucrative business, with a culture that spawns loyalty, community and ingenuity. Kaylee shares three tips to be a good listener, spoiler alert it all comes down to context!

We talk about relationships and Kaylee shares that she and her husband work very hard to keep miscommunications at bay. From managing expectations ahead of time to allowing each other space and respect even when they aren’t able to show up at their best.

Finally, Kaylee reminds us that we’re all the main characters in our own life so while sometimes a friend or even loved one may act in a way that we don’t understand, chances are it wasn’t on purpose simply because we’re not the main character in their story. Just like our actions will influence others in ways we haven’t perceived, so it’s better to give each other grace and not take it so personally.

    About Kaylee Johnson:

Kaylee is a hiker and explorer. Her goal is to live simply, see beautiful places, and meet interesting people. Living simply and sustainably her goal is to enjoy life fully now since tomorrow is not promised.

  • EP 100 Developing a Leadership Team.

Attention business owners. Take note of the importance of having a leadership team that is empowered. For years, I struggled with work-life balance, releasing control and trusting others. I want to encourage managers and leaders to open up their minds and ears.

Consider two to four individuals on your team who could benefit from leadership training, earn more money, and have a larger role within your organization.

Gather those for a meeting to understand their strengths, dreams, and ideas.

Encourage and allow those individuals to create, build, or do whatever they think could build or boost your company. Coming to terms with failure is a learning experience for all.

Our leadership teams take ownership, set the bar for other team members, and are there day-to-day overseeing operations. This team allows me to work on the business and create more opportunities for all.

    When they open up, listen.

When they suggest an idea, support it.

When it works out, congratulate and offer a bonus.

When it fails, dive into what was learned and how can you overcome it.

You can do it, begin thinking about what can happen in 2024.
