Salt Dough Ornaments (from onecrazymom blog)
An adult
1 cup flour, plus additional for kneading and rolling
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water
Cookie cutters
A drinking straw
Aluminum foil and a baking sheet
Paint, glitter, decorations
Clear enamel spray or glossy
Ribbon
1. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Set aside
2. Mix flour and salt together in a bowl. Add water and stir until a dough forms.
3. On a lightly floured surface knead the dough for at least five minutes, continuing to add flour as needed to prevent the dough from sticking. This step is important.
a. If you skip this step, you’ll end up with very sticky dough and it won’t cut into shapes well.
4. Once the dough is ready, roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface in 1/4″ thickness. Use cookie cutters to make various shapes.
5. Use a drinking straw to create a hole in the top of each ornament. You want to do this before you bake the ornaments otherwise the ornaments are too hard to punch holes and may crack.
6. Place onto prepared cookie sheets and preheat oven at 225 degree until dry (or 200 degrees depending on oven), turning every 30 minutes (typical bake time is 30-60 minutes depending on thickness).
7. Once dry, decorate as desired on newspaper or any other table cover that can get dirty.
8. Spray with clear enamel spray to protect the ornaments (recommend spraying outside).
9. Add ribbon and hang in tree or give to others.
