Dr. Dirk Huyer MD

In March 2014, Dr. Dirk Huyer was appointed Chief Coroner for Ontario.

Dr. Huyer received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1986. He has served as a coroner in Ontario since 1992 and served as Regional Supervising Coroner for the Regions of Peel and Halton, as well as the Counties of Simcoe and Wellington. He has been involved in over 5,000 coroner’s investigations.

Dr. Huyer has specific expertise in the medical evaluation of child maltreatment, and has worked with the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program at the Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Huyer is the Chair of both the Deaths Under Five and Paediatric Death Review committees of the Office of the Chief Coroner. He is also an Assistant Professor with the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto.

In partnership with Ontario’s Chief Forensic Pathologist, Dr. Michael Pollanen, in 2015 the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario’s Forensic Pathology Service delivered the province’s first unified strategic plan for Ontario’s Death Investigation System. Outlining the strategic direction for the organization for the next five years, a key priority is to provide high quality services that are responsive to Ontario’s diverse needs, both culturally and geographically. This includes a commitment to engaging with Indigenous leadership and community members for the purpose of enhancing death investigation services to their communities.

Kate McMaster is a Certified Human Resources Professional with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Diploma in Funeral Services Education. She has over 25 years of experience in the bereavement sector, as well as in education and professional development. Kate is currently the EducationCoordinator for the Ontario Association of Cemetery & Funeral Professionals,  where she plans, develops, and delivers continuing education and licensing education programs. Previously, she worked as a Funeral Director and an HR Generalist for funeral homes, as well as a Professor of Funeral Service for Humber College. Kate is also an active member of her community, volunteering for various organizations such as Children Believe and Hospice Vaughan. In her free time, she enjoys sports, music, business publications, and traveling.

Darren Denomme is a bereavement sector professional with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy from the University of Toronto. He has almost 30 years of experience in the sector and over 15 years of involvement with the Ontario Association of Cemetery and Funeral Professionals (OACFP). Darren is currently the Executive Director of the OACFP having served in a volunteer capacity as President in 2015 and 2 terms as a director. Prior to becoming the Executive Director of the OACFP Darren was the Manager of North Bay Roman Catholic Cemeteries for 23 years. Darren is also an active member of the North Bay musical community where he performs with the 22 Wing Military Band, the North Bay Symphony Orchestra, and many other local groups.
