Superstar musician and songwriter MINDI ABAIR took some time to chat with me after finishing her latest album. She's been recording music for twenty years and over a dozen albums, but this her third studio project as Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers. Mindi shared her musical life story from zero to fifty, as May 23rd is her milestone birthday. And I wish I had her energy and drive, but I am sure those qualities must come from doing what she loves everyday. Some of my guests are so gracious that they give me enough of their time to fill more than one episode. Such is the case with singer-songwriter CHRIS BARRON who let me interview him as he was out on the road in his Subaru. Chris shares a little bit of the story of his rock band SPIN DOCTORS, including the love-hate relationship with his bandmates (Eric, Aaron & Mark) who are still performing today. I asked her about some of her collaborative relationships and how each partner brought a unique dynamic to her creative efforts. I also attempted to bond with Shelly by reminiscing about the seventies music we grew up with and how it influenced us. As you will sense from the conversation, Shelly has a warm and calm demeanor, and definitely has a passion for creating songs, often with a partner (“I like the company.”) She had some helpful things to say about getting writer’s block out of your system, and advice on how to help creative ideas flow more freely. She and I briefly reviewed her four biggest songs, as I am sure she’s done so many times. But it was fun to hear about how, in the 1980’s, she went about submitting her material to a major recording artist, and how one of those songs got onto a debut album, which soared to triple platinum status. ROSLYN KIND and I finish the conversation we started, and it only gets better as it goes along. Rozzie shares from her heart about how her positive attitude and spirituality guided her path through the ups and downs. She recalls her songwriting experience in the eighties when she collaborated on a song called "Light Of Love" and tells a quick fun story about it. But most of the episode is the two of us forming, as Rozzie put it, a camaraderie. She finishes strong by imparting some of her wisdom for other artists to gain confidence.
