  • When Life's "Highlight Reel" is Behind Us

    Send us Fan Mail

Arguably the best professional mascot ever, Kenn Solomon created and lived "Rocky" of the Denver Nuggets.  I was also a mascot - at Drake University and for the Denver Broncos - and never was anywhere NEAR the caliber of Kenn, so I was thrilled when he agreed to join me on Stubbornly Young to talk about LIFE AFTER ROCKY.  Kenn shares a lot that's relevant to us all, including this excerpt:  "I just dreaded the day that I had to say 'I used to be..."  I found this conversation so useful in framing up the mindset adjustment when we have to simultaneously accept that a highlight reel of our life is behind us - AND that we want more highlight reels knowing that they may never be as high.

  • How to Transfer Your Wisdom

    Send us Fan Mail

I've always wondered if it's possible for me to transfer my head FULL of wisdom to, well, optimally, my sons - and if not them, to ANYONE!  Thinking back, as a much younger man did I absorb wisdom from others?  Ed McCarthy, author of Life Letters (Book 1 - 2 and 3 to follow) describes the lack of wisdom transfer as a sad loss of the most valuable resource.  After a near death experience he described in Life Letters, he decided to try to FIX this problem.  Ed designed the Wisdom Transfer Platform to do just that - and to let you and me do it too.  This is a very thoughtful conversation - you'll enjoy learning more about "wisdom transfer" and it will give you ideas about how to approach that in your own life.

    Synopsis:

Ed McCarthy, author of "Life Letters: Five Decisions to Wealth, Wisdom, and Happiness," discusses his journey from CEO of software companies to real estate entrepreneur and accidental author. His book, inspired by his children, aims to transfer wisdom across generations through the Wisdom Transfer Platform. McCarthy emphasizes the importance of storytelling over preaching to convey wisdom effectively. He highlights the significance of gratitude, accountability, and decision-making, sharing personal anecdotes like his encounter with Gary Hart to illustrate life lessons. The platform encourages users to share their wisdom, fostering a community of lifelong learners.

  • Retirement, Rebranded for You and Me

    Send us Fan Mail

At first I didn't want to do this interview because for I’ve got a strong impression of AARP - that it's for for VERY OLD PEOPLE, and associated closely with the same audience as those pictured in ads for the "I've fallen and I can't get up," alert device.  I understand that will probably be me at some point, but not now.  The Stubbornly Young are anything but that stereotyped image.

So, yes, I was hesitant.  And more than hesitant, I’m CURIOUS – which IS a critical trait for being Stubbornly Young.  I wondered how AARP is managing its brand now that so many retired people are living another 30, even 40 years, with the first 20 or more still NOT the audience AARP branded to reach when it started.  I had tons of questions about that, and then, what we can LEARN and how we can benefit from the AARP (beyond discounts).

  • Songwriting with Nashville Millennials

I met Jeff Power at a songwriters' event in Denver.   He was accompanied by 3 other songwriters who were performing their music together - they were good, and watching Jeff, by far the oldest of the bunch, was inspiring!  You know from past episodes of Stubbornly Young that I'm contemplating what my life will be like when I step aside from a full-time career.  I want to do something creative and fun, and earn some money doing it to keep the financial wheels greased.  Jeff Power is a minister turned philanthropy leader, who in retirement has become a passionately active country music songwriter.  You'll love Jeff's upbeat energy, and if you are curious about the songwriter's role in the music scene, you'll appreciate hearing what Jeff has learned, and more about his journey pursuing a new passion in retirement.  Has he written a hit yet?  Listen to find out.

  • Supersonic Travel Coming Soon to You

    Send us Fan Mail

Listeners may know that for over 5 years I've been hosting ProCO360, a podcast featuring world-class Colorado entrepreneurs.  Recently I interviewed three such entrepreneurs in front of a live audience as part of a Denver Ventures conference.

Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic, was one of those interviewed and even as I was engaged in our conversation, I thought of you - the Stubbornly Young.  Blake is one of the most amazing of the hundreds of CEOs I've met - the way he sees challenges and innovation is inspiring.  Led by BOOM, supersonic flight is coming back and this interview will be top of mind when you begin hearing more and more about it.  You'll say, "I heard that guy!"  Thanks to Denver Ventures and to Blake Scholl for their permission to repurpose our conversation for Stubbornly Young.

  • Surprises in the PICKLEBALL Phenomenon

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Stubbornly Young we’re going to focus on the surprises inside the phenomenon of pickleball.  Of course, you know pickleball is EVERYWHERE, and my guess is that at least HALF of you (LIKE ME) play pickleball either casually – or like an addiction.  Let’s learn more about what’s going on in this world of reportedly more than 14 MILLION players!  I’m fascinated with the growth of the sport, wondering whether it's a FAD or here to stay – and curious about the uniquely cross-generational opportunities pickleball presents.  Some of the answers to my questions were surprising!

  • Becoming What's Next

As I contemplate what I want to do when I am no longer a full-time executive, I'm wrestling.  I'm thinking a lot about how I'll want to balance "purpose," recreation, hobbies, learning... and just sitting somewhere in the shade with a nice view having a mircrobrew - sometimes alone, mostly with family, friends and my dog.

This episode with the authors of Revealing your Next Season gives examples of how others with significant leadership roles transitioned to their next season - how they thought about it and what they did.  I found it a deeply helpful conversation, and I think you will too.

  • Shortcuts to Demystifying and Using AI

    Send us Fan Mail

For those with little and moderate (me) understanding of artificial intelligence, this episode is loaded with ways to understand the basics of AI and a brilliant suggestion for an easy and effective way get started using AI with any of the available tools out there (ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Gemini, etc.).  Since I recorded this episode and followed Chris Ferris’s suggestion, I’ve quickly become a pretty decent user of AI at my day job and in podcast preparation.  The more I use AI, the more I want to.  Using AI is expanding how I think about… thinking.  It’s useful and fun.  Listen to this episode to unlock a key secret to using AI!

  • The Best Mindset to Learn Something New

    Send us Fan Mail

Rule # 7 of Stubbornly Young is "Learn New Things."  Why?  Because learning new things gives us an overall sense of freshness and excitement - except maybe dancing - the jury's still out on that one for me.

Brian Reynolds is the co-founder of The Bridge Teachers.  I know, BRIDGE?  Isn't that the game for "old people," not for the Stubbornly Young?   That perception (and sometimes the truth) created an irony that made me curious.  What I learned from Brian, a decades-long teacher, about the BEST MINDSET for learning anything was a wild "AHA" for me!  Definitely something you'll want to try.

  • How This Attorney Retired and Became a Successful Author

    Send us Fan Mail

I met Mark Shaiken when he was referred to me by a mutual friend who thought he might be a good fit for my podcast. Thank you Cristin Crampton Day! I was intrigued by Mark’s transition from a bankruptcy attorney to author. I wondered just how good of a writer he might be so I replied to Mark asking for a couple of his SIX books to sample. I read with amazement his samples of his two books of essays, “And Just Like That,” and “It’s What Makes Me Me – A Retired Attorney’s Relationship with Life and Times.” Both are moving, easy to read, funny and caused me to move into useful introspection. I then listened on Audible to one of his four legal thriller books, “Cram Down.” I enjoyed the unique story! I decided there was a ton I wanted to talk with Mark about including:

    • How did you shift your identity from that of an attorney to that of an author?
    • What did those around you think of this transition to a completely different focus at the time in life when most people are settling back?

    Such a great conversation!
