🔥We sat down with Jess recently, former Physique competitor and current badass Mumma Bear, and listened while she openly shared her experience training for and competing in bodybuilding.
🔥Jess took us on a wild ride that cut through the glitz and glamour of being on stage, what drove her to commit to the industry and the mental health struggles it produced.
🔥An important personal story to help us all consider the ‘why’ before embarking on ANY new path – is this inspiration or desperation?
Men's Mental Health matters but does being the 'Alpha Male' make it worse? Are the 'Big Dogs' resisting change?
A ballsy exploration of the emotional and social barriers which hinder emotionally vulnerable conversations among men - perhaps this problem all starts with rigid gender roles?
Let's get the conversation started with Braden from 'Blokes Don't Talk'
These are HUGE reasons why people seek out a coach. The other reason being, the training program may very well include 8 hours sleep and a hot bath (Dreamy right?)
In today's episode, Excel Health and Performance coaches, Corey and Mick, chat with Matteo Giofre, and hear his story from humble beginnings at University, to well established Personal Trainer.
Matteo shares why he choose the fitness and health industry and why he chose to undertake further education and importantly, as a coach, the need to never end the learning journey to support 'Whole Body Function' and 'Whole Self Overhaul'.
This was an honest, open and enlightening chat which demonstrates the commitment required by Coaches and Personal Trainers to do the best possible for their students.
On today's episode, Lia, Mick & Corey discuss the chaos that surrounds 'big change' in life and share tips & tricks on how to mitigate that chaos.
Tune in to hear Lia's big news and how a manifestation list written 6 years ago, has flourished into life through slow, but STEADY progress - a metaphor for life!
Want change as well? But keep coming up with excuses why it's too hard? This episode is for you!
Welcome! You've just landed at Student & the Coach.
Ep 4: Rest days are for pussies
NO! You're a pussy if you DON'T take rest days.
During this round, Lia, Mick & Corey explore the 'glorification' of working through rest days and the inevitable injuries which result. Injuries which can be avoided by taking a strategic approach to training and adjusting your levels of Training, Recovery and Nutrition - to provide an optimal environment for well being, for the individual circumstance.
Remember: You have to recover as hard as you train.
Let's give some love to our breathing, our high rep, light weight accessory work and our recovery - the foundations of lifting heavy!!
You don't win brownie points for being jacked on pre-workout and maxing out every session.
Welcome! You've just landed at Student & the Coach.
Ep 3: “Self Sabotage”
Let's say, you have training tomorrow and you’ve decided not to drink tonight even though you had a big night planned. All your mates are drilling you with the old ‘don’t dog the boys!’
Or
You have a friend that won’t stop climbing into bed with their ex, they know it’s toxic but can’t seem to stop.
Or
You’ve got 30 minutes to kill on your break at work, do you head outside for a stroll in the sun? Or stay in the tearoom with your colleagues and snack on treats?
The answers to these scenarios all depend on the personal goals, the individual desire to ‘fit in’ and the critical decision which are made when under pressure.
In today's episode our hosts, Lia, Mick and Corey, student and coaches from Excel Health and Performance, discuss how we’re sabotaging our goals due to deeper emotional needs. When we identify that need, and its contribution to sabotage, we’re well on the way to success.
Self-sabotage is a result of thoughts or behaviours that make us act in a way that keeps us from reaching our goals. It’s the voice in the back of your mind saying, ‘this is too hard, you can’t do this!

Ep 2: Inspiration or desperation?
In today's episode our hosts, Lia, Mick and Corey, student and coaches from Excel Health and Performance, discuss the DRIVERS and the WHY we begin making radical change in our life - Is that due to inspiration (running towards something) or desperation (running away from something).
Through discussion we were led to the discovery of how we program ourselves into certain limiting beliefs at an early age, which then repeat themselves in adult life. Partially due to the current state of affairs surrounding the social media influence.
We run through (...and agree & disagree) on the sustainability of plant based diets and that perhaps making lifestyle choices with health in the forefront of our mind, might in fact start a chain effect of improving the negative impact we have in our environment – Does leading a healthy life start with making sustainable choices?! *CONTROVERSIAL*
We question our morality, veganism, ethics, social change and everything else you might not want to bring up at the family Christmas lunch!
