  • Hispanic/a Racial identity
Join us on WednesdayAugust 1, at 9 pm eastern with Professor Tanya Hernández, recently named to Fordham Law’s Archibald R. Murray Professorship. Her upcoming book, Multiracials and Civil Rights, shows that people of mixed race experience the same kind of discrimination as any other non-white person. That is, they suffer bias not because they’re multiracial, but because they’re perceived to be non-white. “Their personal racial identities are somewhat novel, but the discrimination they face is not,” says Hernández. “It’s still a skin-based hierarchy.”

  • Cultural Marxism and The Death of America
When we talk about cultural marxism, we are talking about the Social research Institutite of the Frankfurt School. The term "Frankfurt School" arose informally to describe the thinkers affiliated or merely associated with the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research; it is not the title of any specific position or institution per se, and few of these theorists used the term themselves. The Institute for Social Research (Institut für Sozialforschung) was founded in 1923 by Carl Grünberg, a Marxist legal and political professor at the University of Vienna, as an adjunct of the University of Frankfurt; it was the first Marxist-oriented research center affiliated with a major German university. However, the school can trace its earliest roots back to Felix Weil, who used money from his father's grain business to finance the Institut.  Weil (1898–1975), a young Marxist, had written his doctoral thesis (published by Karl Korsch) on the practical problems of implementing socialism.    Show sponsor:  StudentsForABetterFuture.Com

  • Why Can't Grammy Remember Me?
    Dementia in Light
New research published today (Feb. 7) in the Public Library of Science supports the idea that cultural constructs around how people perceive age contribute to the development of dementia. People who associate old age with uselessness or senility are more likely to develop dementia than people who associate it with positive attributes, such as wisdom and respect. The research also highlights how environmental factors are important to consider when looking for ways to prevent dementia. Other factors that increase risk include stroke and smoking. The study was carried out by a team of Yale University scientists, led by epidemiologist Becca Levy. During time spent in Japan, Levy says, she began thinking about digging more into the causes of dementia.
