The Melbourne Disability Expo is on 17th and 18th November. 

Sam catches up with the ambassadors for the event Ben Pettingill and Mike Rolls.  Ben lost most of his sight when he was 16, while Mike picked up a serious bacterial infection when he was 19 and lost his legs and part of one hand. They talk about their experiences and how they now engage with the Disability Community.

Also Lizzie explains how the Optus outage affected her.

Sam has a chat with Fiona Woods, the President of BCA - which does not, in this case, stand for the "Business Council of Australia" but rather "Blind Citizens Australia"  Fiona tells us about her history with the organisation; BCA's goals; and some current projects.

On this week’s Studio 1: The Blind Australian of the Year Awards will be announced 28th October 2023.  Sam chats to last year’s winner Cal Hooley alongside the organiser of the event Marie Bampton.

We chatted about Cal’s work with communities in the Northern Territory; getting about in the remote areas of Australia; and his love of baseball.  

We also chatted with Marie about the awards; their history and the role Link Vision performs.

We cross to New York, New York to talk to Nancy D Miller, Chief Executive Officer of VISIONS Service for the Blind and Visually Impaired - one of Vision Australia’s American cousins.

Nancy is a legend in the world of service provision for the vision impaired - she has been working in her current role since 1987

Nancy tells us about the aims of the VISIONS organisation and the services it provides.

She also speaks very movingly of how her organisation, her clients and her city got through the traumas of 9/11 and the coronavirus pandemic.

Our guest is Vision Australia’s employment guru Belinda Wilson.

She’s a woman with a tough but rewarding job. 

She prepares young people living with low vision and blindness to prepare themselves for their careers and higher education.

Officially Belinda has joined us to talk about Vision Australia’s LEAP Program which offers leadership and employability training to young people aged between 14 and 19 living with a vision impairment, but this is the third time that we’ve had Belinda on Studio 1 and we wanted to get to know her as a person.

As Matthew jumps on a train to Birmingham, we send new recrui Lizzy Eastham to talk to Sarnya Moss (nee Parker) a Tandem Cycling Gold Medalist who competed at the very first IBSA World Games in Madrid.

As a Tandem Cyclist herself, Lizzy wants to know what it takes to succeed in the sport, and how she can do tings differently to succeed.  

We also learn that Trademen do occasionally arrive early....
