She is also a counselor and awesome human! So we teamed up for this extra episode where we are PLAYING MUSIC FROM EMERGING AND INDEPENDENT ARTISTS! I also tell you the most embarrassing Christmas party thing I did this year (very NSFW) and Tia tells you about the weirdest gift she ever received (it's SFW).
We have Christmas songs from, Mariya Stokes, Alecia Aichelle, Justin LeBrash, Karac Hendriks,The Heels, The Orchard, The Dungarees and Christina Rogers. So some fun chit chat and Christmas cheer is what we about this episode!
Ryan Langlois was perfect for this episode! He's a country/roots/rock singer/songwriter and is the founder and doer of #youdonotwalkalone campaign over the last two years in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association! This episode is very open, honest and everything he says is beautifully worded. I loved re-listening to this episode!
We discuss mental health as an independent or emerging artist and how important your mental wellbeing is and how to deal with some of the tougher "no's," the tougher shows, the tougher days as an artist. We talk about the constant battle of "Am I good enough?," validation, how to handle criticism and constructive criticism, comparing progress of other musicians/artists/bands and others in the industry. We touch on body and image issues. Financial stress. Pain creates art. we discuss how to deal with lots of travel and tours and weird schedules. We touch on burn out. Drugs and alcohol use and actually how alcohol is being used less. How to balance out the really big highs and the really big lows. Of course we talk about resources and course of action - there is hope! We're all excited to feature his song, "This Is My HomeYou can find Ryan and his music on all social media platforms and all of his music also on Spotify, Apple, Google and anywhere you get your music!
Welcome to Studio B. Episode 7 - Studio Luv with guest, audio engineer and producer, Josh Gwilliam!
Known for taking the best of traditional techniques and integrating them seamlessly with modern technology, Josh began his career as a producer and engineer in 2001. He has held his place behind the glass for years working with a wide array of artists in all genres. His goal is always to capture music in its purest form.
Josh's distinctive approach to music has led him to work with artists such as The Roadhammers, George Canyon, Cowpuncher, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Miesha & The Spanks, Ghosts of Modern Man, Sidney York, Lauren Mann and many many more artists of all levels - from emerging and independent to signed and charting.
Josh has worked as a respected freelance producer in various studios across Canada and the USA as has now made his home at OCL Studios in Alberta.
In this feature, we talk about studio sessions. From the basic studio terms to how to book studio sessions; how to find the right studio and team, and how you can use your time in the studio effectively and professionally!
What I love most about this episode is that you can hear the passion and love Josh has for creating the best sound for his artists at any caliber!
Welcome to Studio B. Episode 6 - Yeah, I'm Free-lancing" w/ guest freelance drummer Weston Blatz.
The way Weston describes himself on his social media is: "25 years old, chasin’ the dream and lovin’ every second of it. 2x ACMA Musician of the Year!" He's very respected, talented and well versed in being a freelance musician. He's been doing it professionally for over 5 years and he's a full time freelance musician too!
In this episode we talk about becoming a freelance musician and how freelance musicians work with artists and how artists can hire freelance musicians and the best way to do it. We cover everything from networking, relationship building, unions, personality and about being a good hang, drive, pay, booking, education and answer a lot of questions (hopefully all) you may have had or you as an artist may have had about freelance/session and for hire musicians.
We are back to with freelance bass player, drummer and rhythm guitarist AND talent booker/booking agent Cody Mack! This is easily one of my fave episodes so far! It's a big one, there's a lot to cover and we may ruffle some feathers, but it's a real honest conversation! This episode is all about YOU booking YOUR own show as an independent or emerging artists! We confront the topic of why you may not be getting booked for shows are securing show spots and starting out, most artists/musicians don't have a booker/agent or anyone to really assist them when booking shows, where do you start? We tell you that! We discuss EPKs, how to approach venues to book a show and who's job it is to promote the show. We talk about what you should and have prepared before booking a show and how to prepare a show so it's successful!! I even became enlightened when we discussed a way of booking shows that some venues have done - I saw it as a huge negative, but Cody explains how it's a very great learning experience for green artists!
This is part 1 of a 2 part feature about booking shows as an independent or emerging artist with our professional Cody Mack!
He's a freelance drummer, bassist and rhythm guitarist, as well as a Booking Agent and Talent Buyer and sound guy for some events out of Edmonton.
We brought him in to talk about booking show this week.
Our best advice - be helpful, hungry and hands on!
Originally we were going to have just one episode about venue booking, but Cody and I get talking and you know... we had an amazing conversation about Booking and Talent Agents and what they are looking for when they are looking to hire new talent, what your roll is as an artist when it comes to show bookings and what the venue's job is too. We also talk about open mic nights and how you can use them to promote yourself in the best way! We also talk about what Cody's process is when he's booking artists for venues. Part 2 will focus on how you can book your own shows with success! Follow us at @__studio__b__ and follow Cody at @iamcodymack!
Thanks to Hailey Benedict for the song! Go get, "Rise To Your Fall," now!
We're talking finances and bugdeting with Andrea Nixon. She is a stunning singer-songwriter, teacher, mother and a part of the Board of Directors with the Association of Alberta Country Music. She specifically joined the ACMA Board of Directors to guide and mentor emerging independent artists on finances. It's a scary topic and we don't make it look like unicorns and butterflies, but we are here to help you understand how to finance your career successfully and with less stress!
