  • Yaniv Bernstein knows how you can create a great organisation

    Yaniv Bernstein is what us non techy people call a tech guru. Yaniv is a software engineer turned COO. Yaniv was at Google for 10 years until he decided to join the start up world, working first at Flare and then Airtasker, where until recently, he was VP Engineering and then Chief Operating Officer.

    Yaniv is passionate about leadership and building great teams. His fundamental belief is that the best will be brought out in employees and teams if they feel they will have an impact. As a software engineer turned COO,  it is clear that he has transferred his learnings from the creation of complex software systems and applied it to the creation of complex people systems. It is a fascinating perspective and so we asked him to join us for a chat to share his learnings with you.

    This episode is essential listening for any one that wants an edge in leadership, for all founders our there grappling with building a great team or any one that is just interested in people systems and design. We discuss:

    • Yaniv's journey from Google to Airtasker and what it was like working at Airtasker while it went public
    • Leading with context and how Netflix is the gold star example
    • How to design teams and why trust is key to success
    • Lack of diversity in tech and what is being done in tech to address diversity gaps

  • Why founders need to think about climate risk

    This week we chat about climate risks. We are joined by Kiera Peacock, commercial litigation partner at Marque Lawyers who is our resident expert on all things climate change.

    The backdrop to our discussion is:

    • The "Green Recovery" where nations around the world have directed Covid 19 stimulus towards clean, rather than polluting, options. While the March 2021 UN Environment Programme report found that 18% of total recovery spending around the world has gone towards green initiatives, unfortunately in Australia, the figure is 2% and of the major economies, Australia was the worst.
    • President Biden’s Climate Summit, held to coincide with Earth Day, where the US increased its pledge to cut carbon emissions by 2030 but Australia stuck to its Abbott-era 2030 emissions pledge.
    • The announcement of Australia's federal budget last week which contained little funding for renewables and climate change action.

    We ask Kiera to explain:

    • What are the climate agreements around the world?
    • What does net zero emissions mean?
    • What is Australia's legal approach to climate change?
    • What is the Australian government doing?
    • What are businesses doing?
    • Why should companies start thinking about climate risks?
    • What are the biggest risk for companies who don't think about climate risks?
    • How do you build in good governance practices that include climate considerations.

  • Ladies: Choose to Challenge

    We examine what 2020 meant for women. As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a massive global economic downturn. You have probably heard the terms “pink recession” and “she-cession”, describing the fact that women have been more financially and mentally impacted by the impacts of COVID-19 compared to men. This week we delve into why this is the case. We discuss:

    • the general impact that COVID-19 has had on women
    • the impact to funding for female founded start ups (hint - it was bad)
    • why women have been hardest hit
    • why it matters and why women are key to economic recovery
    • the wins for women in 2020

    We also chat about the 2021 International Women's Day theme #choosetochallenge, what that means to us and the IWD events we are excited about.

  • Welcome to season 2

    Welcome to season 2 of Subtitles On!

    Last season we talked about the big concepts. We discussed everything from incorporating your company, to funding your company to putting in place employee incentive schemes. This season we’re still going to unpack corporate language but we’re putting more of a focus on what’s hot in business right now – corporate trends, case studies and interviews.

    It’s time to take these big concepts and talk about how they work in practice. Expect to hear episodes on:

    • the synchronisation of global decarbonisation;
    • purpose and profit;
    • funding trends;
    • climate change and directors' duties;
    • IPOs and more!

    Join us, G and Fee this week on Subtitles On to hear what season 2 has to offer.

  • Subtitles On Season 2 is about to roll - subscribe now

    We're back and super excited about our second season of Subtitles On.

    Season 2 has the same simple goal, we unpack corporate language that is designed to confuse and exclude. Unfortunately, when you look at the stats, and from firsthand experiences, it is often women who are underrepresented and excluded from starting businesses, running companies, or being appointed to the board of directors.

    We, G and Fee, the hosts of Subtitles On and lawyers from Marque's corporate team, work a lot with female founders and start-ups, so that’s who we are talking to although men are allowed to listen too. If you haven't already tuned in, think of the podcast as your corporate subtitles service, so you’ll never again find yourself in a boardroom wondering if you’re the only one who doesn’t know what a shot-gun clause does.

    This season we will continue to tackle big legal topics, but we are also going to:

    • focus on trends and what we are seeing in the Australian start-up community
    • share some case studies
    • share our predictions for 2021

    If you haven't already, subscribe now.

  • Employee share ownership plans (ESOPs)

    After a not so brief hiatus, we are back!

    We all know that it is the people behind a startup that can make or break its chance of success. So with limited financial capacity during the crucial years of growth how do startups attract, retain and incentive talent? Often the answer is an ESOP, also known as employee share ownership plan.

    Join us, G and Fee this week on Subtitles On where we chat all things ESOPs.

  • Convertible notes and SAFEs (Simple Agreement for Future Equity)

    When you are looking to raise money for your start up the first thing you probably think about is giving away shares (equity) for money. However, this is not the only means of raising capital. SAFEs and convertible notes are an alternative way for your startup to raise funds and can have several advantages.

    This week on Subtitles On we will explain the features, similarities and key differences between a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) and a Convertible Note
