House Fires (Part 7)
1. Intro: The Gospel
Matthew 5:48 [***New International Version]
Romans 3:10
As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one;
2 Corinthians 5:21
Galatians 3:13
a. The most beautiful and precious gift of the Gospel “is not the forgiveness of sins or the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ, is not eternal life, but the greatest gift of the gospel is we can know HIM” (i.e., we get JESUS’ presence now!)! (John Piper)
b. Main Question: If we get the HOLY SPIRIT, WHO is the triune GOD’s presence on earth today, then what does HIS presence mean for us right now? (i.e., Now that we are saved, why doesn’t GOD call us to heaven to enjoy HIS full presence?
i. Answer: There is an assignment that brings with it a greater experience of JESUS’ presence prior to experiencing HIS full presence!
Colossians 1:23b–25
23….This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. 24Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—
c. Sub Question: How do we show JESUS?
2. Main Idea: The transforming power of the Gospel though the HOLY SPIRIT is we captivated by promises of GOD in spite of what the world says or offers us!
Joshua 1:1–15 [NIV]
a. Question: “Can [we] as 21st century Gentiles take a promise to Joshua and apply it to” us? “Yes for three reasons.”(John Piper)
i. First reason: “This promise is not limited to Joshua.” (Piper)
Isaiah 41:10 [***English Standard Version]
fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
ii. “Second reason, 2 Corinthians 1:20” (Piper)
2 Corinthians 1:20 [***ESV]
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
1. “in Christ…all the promises are ‘Yes.’” “I’m an offspring of Abraham so all the promises made to the people of Israel are made to Christians because we are offspring of Abraham in the Messiah.” (Piper)
iii. “Third Reason, Romans 8:32 provides the great gospel logic of all good things coming, including the promises of the Old Testament.” (Piper)
Romans 8:32 [***NIV]
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
b. Captivated in the promises of GOD means “follow[ing]” JESUS with all we have! (v. 11)
i. “Get…ready” (v. 11) = “Prepare” (Interlinear) – “to be firm” (NAS Exhaustive Concordance) “established” (Strong’s Concordance)
Psalm 57:7a
My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast;
My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident [New Living Translation]
My heart is fixed [King James Version]
1. “provisions” (v. 11) = “provision for journey” (Brown-Driver-Briggs)
2. Whatever it takes to get there LORD, YOU can have everything!
ii. “Fear is not an option for a CHRISTian. If you have it, repent and fly to [JESUS with] this promise (v. 9).” (Piper)
c. Captivated in the promises of GOD means trusting JESUS to bring resurrection in the place of “death.” (v. 11)
i. What we are going “to cross” only GOD can make a way!
ii. v. 2: “Moses my servant is dead.” Notice, Moses might have been “dead” but GOD’s voice and will was not!!!
iii. Transforming power means being “ready to cross....” (v. 2)
1. When do we move?
Joshua 3:2–4
a. When GOD moves through HIS people now is the time to move!
b. v. 3 “follow it” = “and go” (“come, walk” NAS Exhaustive Concordance) “after” (from the root achar that means “to remain behind” (NAS Exhaustive Concordance)
d. Captivated in the promises of GOD means even though they are given, we must “take” them!
1. “Shout the Name of JESUS without instruction, like you have a relationship!” (Tasha Cobb)
3. Application: “What’ the goal…[to] be fearless if GOD gives the strength?” “full of courage” (Piper)
1 Peter 4:11
a. Transforming power speaks to the world by showing JESUS’ presence!
i. We start to care for people because we see the “image of God” in them and not their attitude, position, needs, hurts, etc.
