Two Essentials for Surgery

1: A Good Knife (Vs 12-13): the Word of God

V 13: naked (gumnos): when all the façade is stripped away

V 13: exposed (tetrachelismenos): like flaying an animal, all is laid bare

App: Trust Him enough to go under his knife

2: The Good Doctor (Vs 14-16): the Great High Priest

-The high priest: made temporary atonement for sin

-The Great High Priest (Jesus) made permanent

atonement

Jesus > any high priest

Rather than intimidating, our Great High Priest

V 14: Humbles Himself

V 15: Has sympathy towards us

V 16: Invites us to Himself

So come:

1: Submit to the Doctor’s healing touch

2: Draw near to Him

V 2: “For we have had the good news proclaimed to us.”

How do you spell rest?

3 TYPES OF REST

1 (V 4): Seventh-day-rest—Rest from our labor

2 (various): Canaan-rest—Freedom from slavery

-Seventh-day-rest: rest in Christ through salvation

- Canaan-rest: enjoying our inheritance in Christ

3 (V 9): Sabbath-rest: A God kind of rest

Katapausis: kata = to cause. Pausis = pause

Sabbitismos: eternal kingdom rest

Assurance (Key to rest): Faith believing God will see you through

App: Practice prayer journaling

“…there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” Genesis 1:5b

V 2 (Concern): “…they did not share the faith of those who obeyed…”

Hearing + Believing = Resting

App: Make every effort not to miss God’s rest

2 things that rob believers of rest:

Pride: “I can handle this myself!”

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Proverbs 16:18

Panic: “We’re not going to make it!”

“…call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

Psalm 50:15

The local church the hope of the world

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27b

Fundamentals: Hope of the World

1: We have the privilege of praying on the world’s behalf (Ez. 22:30)

2: We have the privilege to be an extension of His love (Matt. 5:16)

3: We have the privilege to proclaim, “Christ in you that is the hope of glory.” (Col. 1:27)

Summit Church: The Hope of the World

“…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my

witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”Acts 1:8

1: We start with God: the real hope of the world (ref. Acts 1:4-5, 8a, John 6:44)

2: We start with our Jerusalem: Estes Park (ref. Acts 1:8b, Eph. 6:12, 2Cor. 10:3-5)

3: We start with asking God to send forth workers (ref. Acts 1:8c, Matt. 9:37-38)

Challenge:

-Vertical: Be intentional this week about connecting with God

-Horizontal A: Spend time this week connecting with God’s people via a Life Group

-Horizontal B: Using the following action steps, ask God to grow your heart for those who are far from Him

-Notice them: Ask, “What might God be doing in their lives?”

-Pray for them: Ask God to show you what He might want you to do to bless them

-Listen to them: It’s one of the greatest gifts you could ever give

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:35

1: What does unity look like? V 21b

Love (agape) V 23: undefeatable benevolence and unconquerable goodwill that always seeks the highest good of the other, no matter what the other may do.

App: So realizing God’s pleasure with us that it manifests in our pleasure with others

2: Why is Unity Important? V 21b, 23b, 21a:

App: We must learn to do life together .

3: How do we get there? V 23

First: The closer we get to God the closer we get to each other

Second: Unity is an uphill climb

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Ephesians 4:3

How should we respond?

1: Spend time this week focusing on the vertical

2: Get with God’s people: Multiply movement

-Be intentional noticing people. Ask: “What might God be doing in their lives?”

-Begin praying for them, asking God to show you what He might want you to do to bless them

-Listen to them. Try to understand them

-Ask questions: Be curious about them. What’s their story?

Effect: in our following He fashions us into fishers of people

Summit Mission

One Lord: vertical connection (cause)—Love God

(ref. Matthew 22:37b-38)

One Team: horizontal effect Part A: love God’s people: the Church

(ref. Matthew 22:39)

One Mission: horizontal effect Part B: love those who are far from God

Today’s Primary App: Desire a growing heart for those who are far

from God

The Great Commission: (ref. Matthew 28:18a-20, 2Timothy 2:22)

“Go”: verb usage suggests, “As you are going”

“Go”: It’s not an option—it’s a command

“Go”: While most of us would agree that it’s a top priority few of us actually do it

The Challenge: How can all of us play a part in fulfilling The Great Commission?

First: Spend time this week being intentional about following Christ

Second: As you are going this week be intentional about noticing the people around you

Ask: What might God be doing in their lives?

Third: Add to noticing praying

Ask God to show you what He might want you to do to bless them?

Discipleship: Cause, Process and Effect

1: Cause: “Follow Me” Matthew 4:19a

App: Are you a Christ follower?

2: Process: “I will make you” Matthew 4:19b

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives

in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of

God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore

honor God with your bodies. 1Corinthians 6:19b-20

One Lord: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your

mind. Matthew 22:37

One Team: By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Greater (Part 1): A Greater Life (Hebrews)

Do Vs Done

Please turn in your Bibles to Hebrews 3:1-6

V 3: Jesus > Moses

Your mission: to know God

To come to know Him…

1: You must hear from Him

2: You need a way to Him

V 1 offers the solution

Apostle = one who is sent. Jesus the messenger

High priest = go-between. Jesus’ sacrifice is The Way

For this reason He had to be made like them, m fully human in every way,

in order that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to

God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17

“…Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2fixing our

eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2

App: Recognizing the distractions, keep looking to Jesus

Compare/Contrast: Jesus > Moses

Comparison (V 2): Both were faithful to their calling (ref. Numbers 12:6-8)

Contrast (V 3): “Builder” > “House”

V 6: We (Moses) are the oikos: family, household

V 5-6a: Moses = servant; Jesus = Son

Conclusion:

Moses = Law; Jesus = Grace

“For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did

by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might

be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:3-4

Do Vs Done

D-O: All religions of the world can be spelled D-O. It’s about us trying to D-O enough to please God

2 Problems with D-O

1: At what point will you ever DO enough?

2: The Bible says we never can DO enough.

“…there is no one who does good, not even one.” Romans 3:12b

All of us have become like one who is unclean,

and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags… Isaiah 64:6a

DONE: The Christian faith is spelled D-O-N-E. Jesus has DONE for us what we could never do for ourselves.

"Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. Today I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving me of my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be."
