Kailey Newkirk // Where can we wisely place our faith? Instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all solution, Esther and Mordecai had to work within the system they were given, and while God was in control of the outcome, he used the channels humanity had put in place. But we also can’t place our faith in people to fight for us when no one can win the battles of your heart or character but you. We can’t place our faith in human hands. Esther’s story points to the sovereignty of God—absolutely—but it also shows us that our choices matter. We can choose to place our faith in Jesus because he is the only one who can bring peace everlasting.

Kailey Newkirk // When faced with a defining moment, how do you respond? Esther was challenged, called to take a risk “for such a time as this.” But she didn’t make her decision recklessly. She prepared well, which is the hard work for any of us when we are faced with a choice. Defining moments require preparation and surrender. Not only did Esther prepare well, but she surrendered the outcome to God. He didn’t fail her in her defining moment. In our tough choices, we can surrender the outcomes to God because he doesn’t need to prove his commitment to us—he already has through his grace. And we can’t force God to do what we want by being faithful. We can only be faithful in response to what he’s already done.

Kailey Newkirk // In the face of our uncertainties, God is not surprised. He cares deeply for us and equips us to handle what comes our way. It may not seem that God is leading you in this, to this, but ask him what you can do now that you are here. You don’t carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, but you can work to bring peace in your spaces. God will accomplish his will with or without you. But with God, there are blessings here and nowhere else. He doesn’t promise to lead us where we want to go, but his providence will always take us where we need to be. Maybe God made you the way you are for such a time as this.

Kailey Newkirk // God still works through morally ambiguous characters. He invites us to look for evidence of him even when it’s not obvious to us. He is always at work behind the scenes. God is the hero in the story of Esther and Mordecai and their people. God is speaking to us off the pages, and he is in control. He is evident in every seemingly insignificant decision. He is the one who can draw the threads of this drama together, and he has not abandoned us in our time. While we wait to see glimpses of God, we trust he is always in motion.

Zach Van Dyke // What is grace, who is this grace from, and how do we receive grace? Grace is God, through his son Jesus, saying that he will take on the cost we deserve so that we can be free. When his kindness and love appeared on this earth, that was his grace coming to save us, to transform us. And he continues to be gracious with us. The world cannot offer grace—only our God, abounding in perfect love and mercy, can offer us the grace we need to become who he calls us to be.

Grace Veronica // What does it mean to follow Jesus? When he invites us to follow him, he is choosing us just as much as we are saying “yes” to him. Following Jesus means being in relationship with him. It means being willing to be changed, to be taught, to be flexible, to be obedient—it means we are willing to be transformed. Following Jesus is a step of faith, knowing that no matter what comes our way, we will still say “yes” to him. And he equips us for and commissions us to a lifelong journey with him.

It can change the trajectory of people’s lives. And Jesus reminds us that our cause is something outside of ourselves, not for selfish gain but for God to do surprising things. There is risk in a personal commitment, but with Jesus, that risk is worth it. So let’s take the risk of something that could bring new life to those we love.

O.J. Aldrich // The way we, as image bearers of God, most reflect Jesus is in relationships and community. We can point toward hope—or be pointed toward hope—when we are encircled in and with Christ-centered community. We need God’s extravagant grace, yes. But with that grace given to us, we can better understand how to live in community. Life happens in all the seemingly smaller instants—laughs, tears—just as much as it does in the larger moments—disagreements, miracles. And we can walk in God’s grace together, side by side.
