  • OCD, Anxiety and the Renewed Mind: A Powerful Chat with Taneesha Luv

Today on Sunburnt Souls: A Christian Mental Health Podcast, we explore one of the most complex and deeply personal questions for Christians struggling with mental illness: If God can truly renew our minds, why do persistent negative thought patterns and emotional struggles remain?

Even with deep faith, the Holy Spirit, and prayer, the weight of mental illness can often feel at odds with the joy and freedom promised in Christ. This essential episode, hosted by Pastor Dave Quak, delves into the tension between spiritual transformation and persistent struggles, bringing honesty and hope to the conversation for believers wrestling with their mental health.

Why Do We Still Struggle? Understanding the Causes of Mental Illness

Christian mental health doesn't exist in isolation—it’s influenced by genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. We discuss:

    • Genetic predisposition and mental health: Are they simply part of our story?
    • Why is mental illness often treated as something that must be “fixed” or overcome by faith alone?
    • Is prolonged suffering a sign of weak faith, or could it be part of God’s purpose for growth and empathy?

Mental Illness vs. Sin: The Struggle for Understanding

Many characteristics of mental illness—such as intense anxiety, sadness, anger, and isolation—can mirror sinful tendencies. This raises difficult, crucial questions for the Church:

    • How do we genuinely differentiate between a mental health disorder and sinful behaviour?
    • Are we responsible for intrusive thoughts and emotions we can’t control?
    • How can we love others well and stay connected to Christian community when mental illness pulls us away?

    Finding Peace in the Tension

This is not a search for easy answers, but a courageous conversation about embracing grace, wrestling with the hard questions, and finding God in the struggle.

  • Mark McCrindle: Gen Alpha Mental Health, Technology, and the Future of Christian Faith

Sunburnt Souls: A Christian mental health podcast features an insightful and data-driven conversation with Mark McCrindle, a leading social researcher and futurist who coined the term ‘Generation Alpha’ (born 2010-2024). Mark brings unique, evidence-based insights into the mental health trends shaping the youngest generation growing up in a hyper-digital world.

How Technology and Social Media Are Shaping Mental Health

Gen Alpha is the first generation to be fully immersed in digital technology from birth, radically influencing their mental health, identity, and social interactions. We discuss the critical implications of this shift, including:

    • The profound impact of constant connectivity and screen time on developing minds.
    • How social media is shaping self-worth and mental resilience.
    • The challenges and opportunities of online education and digital learning.

The Pressures Facing Gen Alpha and Anxiety Trends

Mark shares his observations on key societal trends influencing the mental well-being of today’s children, which is vital for Christian parents and educators to understand:

    • Shifting family dynamics and changing parental roles.
    • The significant rise of anxiety and stress in younger age groups.
    • The importance of fostering resilience, emotional intelligence, and faith-based community support.

Creating a Supportive Environment for the Next Generation

With mental health challenges on the rise, how can parents, educators, and faith communities provide the right support for Gen Alpha? Mark explores why Christian communities have a unique opportunity to offer stability, identity, and hope to the next generation.

This conversation is a must-listen for anyone invested in the future of faith and mental health in the digital age.

  • Why Church Can Be Horrible For The Mentally Ill- Dave Quak

Sunburnt Souls – Where Faith and Mental Health Collide

Welcome back to Sunburnt Souls. In today’s episode, we’re tackling a tough but necessary conversation: why church can be a difficult place for those struggling with mental illness.

While churches are meant to be places of healing and community, they can sometimes become spaces of discomfort and exclusion for those battling anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges. It’s time to have an honest conversation about how we, as the Church, can do better.

    Rigid Structures and Limited Understanding

Many churches follow a structured, predictable model, but what happens when someone doesn’t fit within that mold?

    • Some people need to worship differently, whether it’s sitting under a blanket, stepping outside, or engaging in ways that feel safe for them.
    • Instead of judgment, we need understanding—mental illness manifests in different ways, and creating a welcoming space means embracing those differences.

The Stigma Around Mental Illness in Leadership

There’s an unspoken belief in many churches that people with mental illness are unfit for public ministry. While no one may say it outright, the reality is:

    • Leaders with mental health struggles are rare—not because they aren’t called, but because they aren’t always accepted.
    • Mental illness does not disqualify someone from hearing God or leading His people. Every leader, regardless of their struggles, is covered by God’s grace.

The Damaging Theology of Mental Health as ‘Spiritual Weakness’

One of the most harmful misconceptions in Christian circles is the idea that struggling with mental illness is a sign of spiritual weakness.

    • Mental illness is a real, physiological condition, not a reflection of someone’s faith.
    • Some of the most spiritually mature believers in history have battled mental health struggles—from biblical figures like Elijah and David to modern-day Christian leaders.
    • Instead of judging those who struggle, the Church’s role should be to support, encourage, and walk alongside them.

Listen Now: A Call for Compassion and Change

This raw and necessary conversation is for anyone who has ever felt unseen or misunderstood in the Church. It’s time to change the narrative and build a more inclusive, understanding, and Christ-like community.

  • Matt Prater on Ministry Burnout, Still's Disease, and People-Pleasing

Sunburnt Souls: A Christian mental health podcast sits down with Matt Prater, a well-known voice from Christian media and radio, whose life has been shaped by passion, ministry, and a deep love for sharing the Gospel.

From his early start in radio at just 15 to his many roles as a youth pastor, DJ, and Christian media host, Matt's journey has always been marked by evangelism. But behind the microphone, he faced immense struggles.

Overcoming Burnout and Battling Chronic Illness In his 30s, Matt faced one of the most challenging seasons of his life, battling:

    • Severe burnout and its emotional toll on a ministry leader.
    • The physical and mental challenges of Still’s disease (a rare form of inflammatory arthritis).
    • The pressure of people-pleasing and the freedom found in surrendering that pressure to God.

Through these hardships, Matt’s faith deepened, leading him to a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger trust in God’s plan.

  • Intersex & Christian Faith: Michael on Identity, Trauma, and Finding God

Sunburnt Souls: A Christian mental health podcast features an extraordinary and vital conversation with Michael about intersex identity, severe bullying, and his unexpected journey to Christian faith. Host Dave Quak sits down with Michael to share his story so the body of Christ can hear and understand this complex reality.

Intersex, Eunuch, and Finding Identity Michael clarifies his biological reality as a person who falls under the intersex umbrella (referred to as a "eunuch from the mother's womb" in Scripture), having both male and female anatomy and not producing secondary sex hormones. He explicitly addresses his non-alignment with the current pride community and his desire for the Church to change him into the image of Christ.

From Relentless Trauma to Reckless Living Michael shares the horrific reality of relentless bullying and trauma he endured during his school years due to his differences, leading him to drop out and eventually adopt self-destructive behaviors—including drugs, drinks, and recklessness—to numb his pain and cope with his mental anguish. He details his struggle with feeling like he "just didn't want to live" rather than actively being suicidal.

The First True Conversation with God The conversation shifts to Michael's powerful turning point: an honest, petulant argument with God where he demanded his life be ended. This led him to an unexpected journey through the Bible, Catholic churches, and eventually to the contemporary church where he finally felt called to enter. This is a powerful testimony of finding God's leading in the midst of the mess.
