Saints preserve us!

Okay, so who are these saints, and why are some of them so troubling? In this episode (Part 1 of 2) , Christine, Erica, and Seth are joined by a special guest to discuss saints whose lives and deeds were somewhat questionable, or whose memories are used for dubious purposes.

Seth introduces Junípero Serra, whose role as "Apostle" to California has come under some scrutiny in the last few decades. Guest speaker, Anthony, shares some of his personal family history involving the California saint.

Erica leads us through the scandalous/hilarious/suspicious life of St. Julian the Hospitaller. A side discussion covers how annoying the word "hospitaller" is.

And, finally, the moment we've all been waiting for; Christine leads us through exactly why she has such a beef with St. Jerome. Buckle up and prepare for the rant.

After a brief PSA on gratitude from family and neighbor, we take our talk to the issues of Thanksgiving. Seth likens grace and gratitude to mysticism. Erica reluctantly brings in John Calvin and his notions of Eucharist. Christine hands it to us straight with why in the world we should stop whining and give thanks.

Also included are discussions on being nice to holiday workers and shoppers, troublesome neighbors, more truths and a half lie, the importance of pets, flooded basements, Sallie McFague, C.S. Lewis, turkey feathers, the gods of coffee, and . . . blue-footed boobies...

After some initial discussion of A.I. (go check out our Season 1 episode!) and a game of 2 Truths and a Lie, Christine buckles down to define some terms we use pretty often, or plan on using this season. The gang mulls over her thoughts, and gives their own input from their more educated points of view.  With obligatory references to Star Trek and Star Wars, this episode serves as a pseudo-preview of subject matters to be discussed throughout Season 2. No warnings on this one, except it might stretch your mind a little. It might also give you some ammo when arguing anonymously with people online. Which we all need these days, right? 

A continuation of last week's discussion on suicide, this week the gang tackles subjects of Death Rituals and Legends, from Theological Literal Sh*t-takes, to The Zoroastrian Towers of Silence, The 47 Samurai, Death Poetry, Cherry Blossoms, Roman Ladies, and Wakes for Benedictine Sisters. 2020 has been a year to remember and it's only September!

Join our troublesome trio for a session of Tarot and Cookies.
