It is not unusual for the believer to become discouraged about prayer. We’ve all had prayers go unanswered, we’ve all prayed for that friend, family member, neighbor, or coworker that goes unanswered. We pray for a miracle, for God to show up, we plead for divine intervention and what we get is crickets. We hear of other people praying for healing and deliverance and they seem to get what they want, but when our prayer goes unanswered, it leaves us wondering, “What’s the point?”

In the church, a big relational deal breaker is the topic of money that causes people to shut down. People have a tendency to check out mentally when the topic of money comes up. A lot of people have left the church and never returned because of the topic of giving.

Rest is what my soul desires but my mind gets focused on the things the prevent my rest. There truly is no “rest for the weary”, when their mind won’t shut down. Our mind has trouble shutting down in these moments, we keep hitting the rewind button as we overanalyze our situation.

We hear those words and we might even scoff a bit if we’ve not been experiencing rest in our life or if life has felt hopeless. In our own life of faith, we’re prone to having a distorted view of Hope. We look at hope through our feelings instead of through our faith. Too many of us pray, “God forgive me for what I’m about to do” instead of praying “God, keep me from doing what I don’t want to do!” That is what it looks like when the believer surrenders their hopes to God’s grace!

The Rich Young Man comes to Jesus entirely sure of his own religious efforts and abilities. Jesus cuts right to his main nerve and attachment to the world – his wealth. Jesus invites the man to put himself in His care. Jesus still invites us to do so, and the petition “Lead us not into temptation” is one way we can pray to put ourselves into His care, and not our own.

When it comes to developing our habit of prayer, we need learn to surrender our wisdom. I’m not saying, “don’t use your mind or be discerning.” What I am saying is that in our life of prayer, we will need to surrender our wisdom in favor of the wisdom God reveals through Scripture and the Holy Spirit.

Pride holds us back in our faith. Pride causes us to think that we know better, it keeps us isolated, it causes us to be overconfident, it makes us defensive, and it strains our relationships. Pride hinders personal growth and creates barriers to experiencing joy, fulfillment, and contentment. In our life of prayer, we need to surrender to pride.
