  • Whatever It Takes
    6/21/20 - Growing Together - Week 2
    Whatever It Takes
    HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
    To know Him.
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ ~Matthew 7:21-23
    ~Exodus 3
4 excuses that prevent us from growing:
    1. Who am I?
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” ~Exodus 3:11
    I’ll be with you.
God always has an execution plan when He asks you to go.
Exchanging our viewpoint for God’s perspective is essential to winning our battles.
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  ~Philippians 3:12-16
That Perspective changes both our view and our attitudes.
Measure yourself by how God sees you.
    2. What if they.
Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”  Moses had some fear, some resistance.
“We can’t live in fear of what everybody thinks about us.”
Proverbs 29:25 says “the fear of man will prove to be a snare, but those who trust the Lord will be kept safe”.
    3. Exodus 4:10 shows that Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
God gives you an opportunity to pioneer something.
“I could let the fear that I have never done this, stop me from from what God has called me to do for my destiny”
    4. Reluctance.
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” ~Exodus 3:13
I want to convince you that your life will never make sense until you are doing something in your life that really makes a difference for God.

  • 8 Steps Toward Growth
    Growing Together Week #1
    8 Steps Toward Growth

Christianity is simply a series of next steps

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! -2 Peter 3:18

Discipleship is not a program; it’s a process

There is a difference between attending church and following Jesus.

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. -1 Peter 2:1-3

As we follow Jesus, we should change and grow

We cannot walk with Jesus and stay the same.

If you’re walking with Jesus… he’s changing something in you, around you, and through you.

I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 3:10-14

Eight Ways we can step into growth:
    1) Read Your Bible

We cannot fully understand who God is if we’re not reading His word

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105

God’s word is a lamp and a light.

Find Bible reading plans at  www.youversion.com

    2) Life Groups

    3) Baptism

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” -Matthew 28:18-20

    Baptism is after salvation

    4) Commit to the Local Church

not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. -Hebrews 10:25

    5) Confession and Repentance

What is there in your life that is between you and Jesus that you need to confess to God and maybe to others… and repent of?
Some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat down in front of me. 2 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 3 “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all? 4 Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When any of the Israelites set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet, I the Lord will answer them myself in keeping with their great idolatry. 5 I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols.’ -Ezekiel 14:1-5

    6) Giving

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. -Matthew 6:21- 24

If you haven’t learned to faithfully give to God, then you haven’t learned how to faithfully follow Him.

    7) Sharing Jesus

I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. -Philemon 1:6

    8) Serving

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms -1 Peter 4:10

We’re not requested to serve; we’re called to serve

You will never become the person God wants you to be until you start serving

Put a Little Bounce in your Step

    Ephesians 1:17-18

    SERIES REVIEW:

Week #1 A setback is actually a setup for a comeback which prepares us for a breakthrough

Week #2 If God has called you to it, He will lead you through it!

Week #3 The Grace of God pushes me to go, even when I don't exactly know how things will turn out

    Week #4 Don’t Quit

2 QUESTIONS TO HELP US BOUNCE FORWARD:

Question #1-   What's my next step?

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6
    1. Wisdom
    2.  I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. Ephesians 1:17

      • When we see God clearly, we’ll follow Him closely.

      • 2 reasons people shy away from getting to know God:
        1. We overestimate how angry He is with us
        2. We underestimate what God wants to do in and through us.
        3. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5
          1. Insight
          2. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, Ephesians 1:18
            1. Ability
            2. and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength Ephesians 1:19

Question #2-   What am I waiting for?

THREE “LEVELS” WHEN IT COMES TO FOLLOWING THE WILL OF GOD”

              Information

              Inspiration

              Transformation

              • Transformation happens when we stop making deals with God

                • Transformation takes time!

                • So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12:1-2 (The Message)

                • Don't Quit
                  Don’t Quit
                  Ruth 4:1-22

In difficult times, we’re not called to quit, even if life seemingly feels like_____________
Boaz went to the town gate and took a seat there. Just then the family redeemer he had mentioned came by, so Boaz called out to him, “Come over here and sit down, friend. I want to talk to you.” So they sat down together. 2 Then Boaz called ten leaders from the town and asked them to sit as witnesses. 3 And Boaz said to the family redeemer, “You know Naomi, who came back from Moab. She is selling the land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 4 I thought I should speak to you about it so that you can redeem it if you wish. If you want the land, then buy it here in the presence of these witnesses. But if you don’t want it, let me know right away, because I am next in line to redeem it after you.” The man replied, “All right, I’ll redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz told him, “Of course, your purchase of the land from Naomi also requires that you marry Ruth, the Moabite widow. That way she can have children who will carry on her husband’s name and keep the land in the family.” 6 “Then I can’t redeem it,” the family redeemer replied, “because this might endanger my own estate. You redeem the land; I cannot do it.” 7 Now in those days it was the custom in Israel for anyone transferring a right of purchase to remove his sandal and hand it to the other party. This publicly validated the transaction. 8 So the other family redeemer drew off his sandal as he said to Boaz, “You buy the land.” Ruth 4:1-8
God's plans are greater than my plans
So Boaz took Ruth into his home, and she became his wife. When he slept with her, the Lord enabled her to become pregnant, and she gave birth to a son. Ruth 4:13
                  God can restore anyone
14 Then the women of the town said to Naomi, “Praise the Lord, who has now provided a redeemer for your family! May this child be famous in Israel. 15 May he restore your youth and care for you in your old age. For he is the son of your daughter-in-law who loves you and has been better to you than seven sons!” 16 Naomi took the baby and cuddled him to her breast. And she cared for him as if he were her own. 17 The neighbor women said, “Now at last Naomi has a son again!” And they named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David. Ruth 4:14-17
                  Surrender to His plans

Real joy comes not from being in control, but surrendering to someone who you know is in control

                  Accept His restoration

                  Bouncing into Grace
                  Ruth 3:1-18

                  • The Grace of God pushes me to go, even when I don't exactly know how things will turn out

                  • One day Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, it’s time that I found a permanent home for you, so that you will be provided for.  Ruth 3:1

No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants for ten generations may be admitted to the assembly of the Lord.  Deuteronomy 23:3

                    • The Grace of God allows us to walk in freedom

                    • As long as you live, you must never promote the welfare and prosperity of the Ammonites or Moabites.  Deuteronomy 23:6

Boaz is a close relative of ours, and he’s been very kind by letting you gather grain with his young women. Tonight he will be winnowing barley at the threshing floor. Ruth 3:2

Then Joshua secretly sent out two spies from the Israelite camp at Acacia Grove. He instructed them, “Scout out the land on the other side of the Jordan River, especially around Jericho.” So the two men set out and came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there that night. 2 But someone told the king of Jericho, “Some Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab: “Bring out the men who have come into your house, for they have come here to spy out the whole land.” 4 Rahab had hidden the two men, but she replied, “Yes, the men were here earlier, but I didn’t know where they were from. 5 They left the town at dusk, as the gates were about to close. I don’t know where they went. If you hurry, you can probably catch up with them.” 6 (Actually, she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them beneath bundles of flax she had laid out.) Joshua 2:1-6

                      • It’s difficult to categorize people when you can call them by name

                        • When you categorize you demonize

                        •  Now do as I tell you—take a bath and put on perfume and dress in your nicest clothes. Then go to the threshing floor, but don’t let Boaz see you until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 Be sure to notice where he lies down; then go and uncover his feet and lie down there. He will tell you what to do.”  Ruth 3:3-4

                          • Sometimes what God is leading us into doesn’t make sense

                          • “I will do everything you say,” Ruth replied. 6 So she went down to the threshing floor that night and followed the instructions of her mother-in-law. 7 After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he lay down at the far end of the pile of grain and went to sleep. Then Ruth came quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. 8 Around midnight Boaz suddenly woke up and turned over. He was surprised to find a woman lying at his feet! 9 “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your covering over me, for you are my family redeemer.” 10 “The Lord bless you, my daughter!” Boaz exclaimed. “You are showing even more family loyalty now than you did before, for you have not gone after a younger man, whether rich or poor. 11 Now don’t worry about a thing, my daughter. I will do what is necessary, for everyone in town knows you are a virtuous woman. Ruth 3:5-11

                            • God is always going to do what is necessary to help us see what our next step is

                            • But while it’s true that I am one of your family redeemers, there is another man who is more closely related to you than I am.  Ruth 3:12

                              • We may not be prepared for something, but that doesn't mean God's not prepared for what we didn't plan for

                              • Stay here tonight, and in the morning I will talk to him. If he is willing to redeem you, very well. Let him marry you. But if he is not willing, then as surely as the Lord lives, I will redeem you myself! Now lie down here until morning.” 14 So Ruth lay at Boaz’s feet until the morning, but she got up before it was light enough for people to recognize each other. For Boaz had said, “No one must know that a woman was here at the threshing floor.” 15 Then Boaz said to her, “Bring your cloak and spread it out.” He measured six scoops[a] of barley into the cloak and placed it on her back. Then he returned to the town. 16 When Ruth went back to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “What happened, my daughter?” Ruth told Naomi everything Boaz had done for her, 17 and she added, “He gave me these six scoops of barley and said, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’” 18 Then Naomi said to her, “Just be patient, my daughter, until we hear what happens. The man won’t rest until he has settled things today.” Ruth 3:13-18

                                Ruth 2:1-23

Now there was a wealthy and influential man in Bethlehem named Boaz, who was a relative of Naomi’s husband, Elimelech.2 One day Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go out into the harvest fields to pick up the stalks of grain left behind by anyone who is kind enough to let me do it.” Naomi replied, “All right, my daughter, go ahead.” Ruth 2:1-2

                                • Christianity is simply a series of next steps

                                • 3 So Ruth went out to gather grain behind the harvesters. And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, the relative of her father-in-law, Elimelech.  -Ruth 2:3

                                  • Life is too short to live for the approval of people

                                  • 4 While she was there, Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters. “The Lord be with you!” he said. “The Lord bless you!” the harvesters replied.  5 Then Boaz asked his foreman, “Who is that young woman over there? Who does she belong to?”  6 And the foreman replied, “She is the young woman from Moab who came back with Naomi. 7 She asked me this morning if she could gather grain behind the harvesters. She has been hard at work ever since, except for a few minutes’ rest in the shelter.”  8 Boaz went over and said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter. Stay right here with us when you gather grain; don’t go to any other fields. Stay right behind the young women working in my field. 9 See which part of the field they are harvesting, and then follow them. I have warned the young men not to treat you roughly. And when you are thirsty, help yourself to the water they have drawn from the well.”  10 Ruth fell at his feet and thanked him warmly. “What have I done to deserve such kindness?” she asked. “I am only a foreigner.” Ruth 2:4-10

                                    • Entitlement always leads to bitterness

                                      • Thankfulness eliminates entitlement

                                      • 11 “Yes, I know,” Boaz replied. “But I also know about everything you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband. I have heard how you left your father and mother and your own land to live here among complete strangers. 12 May the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully for what you have done.”  13 “I hope I continue to please you, sir,” she replied. “You have comforted me by speaking so kindly to me, even though I am not one of your workers.”  14 At mealtime Boaz called to her, “Come over here, and help yourself to some food. You can dip your bread in the sour wine.” So she sat with his harvesters, and Boaz gave her some roasted grain to eat. She ate all she wanted and still had some left over.  15 When Ruth went back to work again, Boaz ordered his young men, “Let her gather grain right among the sheaves without stopping her. 16 And pull out some heads of barley from the bundles and drop them on purpose for her. Let her pick them up, and don’t give her a hard time!”  17 So Ruth gathered barley there all day, and when she beat out the grain that evening, it filled an entire basket. 18 She carried it back into town and showed it to her mother-in-law. Ruth also gave her the roasted grain that was left over from her meal. 19 “Where did you gather all this grain today?” Naomi asked. “Where did you work? May the Lord bless the one who helped you!” So Ruth told her mother-in-law about the man in whose field she had worked. She said, “The man I worked with today is named Boaz.” 20 “May the Lord bless him!” Naomi told her daughter-in-law. “He is showing his kindness to us as well as to your dead husband.  That man is one of our closest relatives, one of our family redeemers.”  21 Then Ruth said, “What’s more, Boaz even told me to come back and stay with his harvesters until the entire harvest is completed.” 22 “Good!” Naomi exclaimed. “Do as he said, my daughter. Stay with his young women right through the whole harvest. You might be harassed in other fields, but you’ll be safe with him.” 23 So Ruth worked alongside the women in Boaz’s fields and gathered grain with them until the end of the barley harvest. Then she continued working with them through the wheat harvest in early summer. And all the while she lived with her mother-in-law. Ruth 2:11-23

                                              • 4 They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.  Ruth 1:4-5

We have two options as followers of Jesus when we look at somebody else's story:

                                                • Condemnation

                                                  • Compassion

                                                  • When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there. 7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah. 8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me. 9 May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.”  Ruth 1:6-9

                                                    • Solitude is awesome… but isolation is destructive

                                                    • 10 and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.” 11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands? 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!” 14 At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her. 15 “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.” 16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” 18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?” 20 “Don’t call me Naomi,” she told them. “Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. 21 I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.” Ruth 1:10-21

                                                      • People typically won't accept our truth until we've shown them our grace

                                                      • So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.  Ruth 1:22

                                                      • Trusting Jesus in Everything
                                                        Trusting Jesus in Everything

                                                        Luke 24:13-35

                                                        • God doesn’t want us to trust Him with some things. He wants us to trust Him with everything.

                                                          • Until we completely trust Him, our lives will never be complete

                                                          • TWO REASONS WE HAVE A HARD TIME TRUSTING GOD:

                                                            1. The speed of our lives

                                                            2. That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. Luke 24:13-14

                                                              • If we are not careful, we can find ourselves drifting away from Jesus.

                                                                • It is possible to know information about Jesus but not have intimacy with Jesus.

                                                                  • It is possible to have conversations about Jesus while you are walking away from Jesus

                                                                  •  As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. Luke 24:15

                                                                    • We can be so busy talking about Jesus that we don’t recognize him when He shows up

                                                                    • 16 But God kept them from recognizing him.  Luke 24:16

                                                                      • Sometimes we don't recognize Jesus because we aren't expecting to see him

                                                                        • Where there is no expectation there is very seldom any revelation

                                                                          • Sometimes we get so busy that we don’t even have time to stop and recognize Jesus.

                                                                            • If the Devil can make you busy, he can change your focus and he can stop you from walking with and recognizing Jesus

                                                                              1. Where we place our expectations
                                                                              2.  He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. 18 Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” 19 “What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. 20 But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21 We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago. Luke 24:16-21

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.  Romans 8:28

22 “Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. 23 They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! 24 Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.” 25 Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” 27 Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:22-27

                                                                                • Staying grounded in God’s Word will almost always assure that we never walk away from Him

                                                                                • 28 By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, 29 but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. 30 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! Luke 24:28-31

                                                                                  • Our lives should be built on God's promises, not our preferences.

                                                                                  • 32 They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” 33 And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them, 34 who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.” 35 Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. Luke 24:32-35

                                                                                    • We can’t see Jesus and remain passive or indifferent. Because when we see Him for who He is, it always causes some sort of reaction.

                                                                                      • When we see Him clearly, we’ll follow Him closely

                                                                                      •
                                                                                        37 min
                                                                                      • God is Always With You
                                                                                        God is Always with You

                                                                                        • God loves me, is always with me, and has great plans for me.

                                                                                          • Often times we allow circumstances to shape our belief in God rather than our belief in God to shape the circumstances that we're going through.

                                                                                          • Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. 5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. 9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. Genesis 37:3-11

THREE BARRIERS THAT MADE JOSEPH QUESTION IF GOD LOVED HIM, WAS ALWAYS WITH HIM AND HAD GREATER PLANS FOR HIM:

                                                                                            1. The pit barrier

                                                                                              • Tragedy doesn’t make an appointment

                                                                                                • Sometimes we wind up in a pit in life because of things that happened to us, and sometimes we wind up in a pit because of choices that we make.

                                                                                                  • Some pits are circumstances… some pits are choices.

                                                                                                  • “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” 21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it. Genesis 37:19-23

IN THE PIT WE TEND TO EXPERIENCE 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF EMOTIONS:

                                                                                                    1. Loneliness

                                                                                                      • Victims never walk in victory

                                                                                                        1. Doubt

                                                                                                          • In the pit, we shouldn't ask for explanation, we should ask God for revelation

                                                                                                            • Don't ever doubt in the dark what God declared to you in the light

                                                                                                              1. The problems barrier

                                                                                                              2. Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

                                                                                                                Genesis 39:1-7

                                                                                                                • Joseph refused to give up what he wanted the most for what he could have in the moment

                                                                                                                  1. The prison barrier

                                                                                                                    • Sometimes God puts us in a place that we call prison not to punish us, but to protect us from things

                                                                                                                    • 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. Genesis 39:20-23

Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. Genesis 40:1-3

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him. Genesis 40:23

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. Genesis 41:39

                                                                                                                      • God will never give us more until we are responsible for what we have…right now

                                                                                                                      • You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.”  So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.” 42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 He had him rid e in a chariot as his second-in-command, and people shouted before him, “Make way!” Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt.  Genesis 41:40-43
