Jesus addressed those whom God had called to be the shepherds over His flock, the clergy of His day… the ones that had just cast the healed man out of the synagogue, rejecting a sheep in the flock of God. Jesus called these religious leaders thieves and robbers.
A couple of weeks ago, we finished a great discourse between Jesus and the people trying to figure out who He was (John 6-8). We pick up where we left off. Jesus walks away from those who want to stone Him for telling them the truth, saying, ”I AM.”— As He moves along, we don’t have precise details on the timing, but we do see that He is in Jerusalem and in the area of the temple. And it’s here that He passes a blind man...
What is truth?— Pilate asked that of Jesus (context). Do people really want the truth? Or do they only want convenient truth? Do they only want to hear what they want to hear?
We pick back up at the temple where Jesus is outing Himself in plain sight. He is the Messiah. He is saying it plain enough by pointing them to the Scriptures. Jesus is trying to get them to match what they are seeing and hearing in Him with the Scriptures. And the response thus far: some are believing. Some are questioning it. Others want to kill Him. — We pick up in John 8, where there is a parenthetical story inserted (actually begins with 7:53).
We’ve spent the last three weeks in John 6 where Jesus performed a spectacular miracle and did some spirited teaching, making friends and enemies. He found out who was in and who was out at this juncture of His ministry. Now we hit chapter 7...
John 6:41-71 // We are fresh off Jesus telling this group of Jews that have tracked Him down after He
fed the 5,000 to Capernaum. He has told them what “work” to do to get right with God,
to get into heaven… “believe in the One the Father has sent.” And He then goes as far
as to tell them who that is ...Him. He is the bread of life. —Now they are just stirred, and
we pick up...
John 6:22-40 // Jesus fed 5,000 and got out of Dodge as He sensed the people were about to make Him their King, the wrong kind of king. If you ever thought Jesus Himself was into politics this is your answer. — We live in a world that is constantly pitting one group of people against another…brother against brother. But Jesus is building a heavenly kingdom. He ain’t got no time for that. So we continue...
