In this podcast, we’re going to break down my personal framework for overcoming pornography—step by step. This isn’t just about resisting porn but actually changing your relationship with it.
Step 1: Bring it to the Light
We start by talking about it. Shame grows in secrecy, and keeping this issue hidden only makes it worse. By bringing it to the light and opening up—whether that’s with a friend, spouse, or a support group—you strip away its power.
Step 2: There's Nothing Wrong With You
Often, it’s not the action itself but the belief surrounding it that causes the most harm. If you think looking at porn makes you a bad person, that belief fuels shame, which in turn keeps you stuck. Ask yourself, "What does it really mean if I look at porn?"
Step 3: Porn Isn’t Bad, It’s Just Cheap
Porn isn’t inherently evil—it’s just cheap. It’s a quick fix for a deeper void. Like eating junk food, it’s not going to satisfy you in the long run, and it’s definitely not going to fill whatever deeper need you’re trying to address.
Step 4: These Aren’t Urges, It’s Just Hunger
When you feel the pull to watch porn, pause and ask, “What am I actually hungry for?” It’s often not about the porn itself but something deeper—loneliness, stress, or emotional voids.
Step 5: Outgrow Porn
The goal is not to just fight porn off but to outgrow it. This means replacing bad habits with better, healthier ones. Build routines, such as exercising, journaling, or learning something new, that replace the habit with positive actions.
Step 6: Address Past Trauma
We all have wounds—big and small—that can fuel unhealthy behaviors. Whether it's a major life trauma or small, repetitive experiences that have added up, addressing these head-on can remove the chains holding you back.
Step 7: Long-Term Success is Achieved Through Intimacy
True healing comes from developing deeper intimacy—whether with your spouse, family, or close friends. Building these close, meaningful relationships is key to long-term success and shifting your perception of sexuality into something more meaningful and fulfilling.
These steps will help you move from fighting against porn to simply outgrowing the desire, and the journey gets easier once you have the right tools.
