An air quality warning has been issued for Western Sydney with alerts in place for Richmond and Penrith at a level of "fair". Backburning around Sydney's Northern suburbs and Macquarie Park is behind the haze and those living in affected areas are urged to close windows and doors until the air quality improves.

Expectations of a large budget surplus may fall short this year as Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers prepares to deliver his pre-budget speech.
