Evangelism begins with relationship. But before we even begin thinking about relationship with those we want to share the gospel with we must consider our relationship with ourselves and with God. We must recognize that real friendship in our day and age is not easy! One of the greatest reasons why is the impact of shame. Loving like Jesus loved feels almost impossible, but it is not. But we must experience Jesus love before we can share it with others!

Evangelism has gotten a bad name? How has a word that means good news become something we are terrified of? Old methods and practices aren’t working well. For years evangelism felt like we were “selling” something? Perhaps we need to change that to become fellow travelers or travel guides! We need to rediscover the Holy Spirits role in evangelism and find new ways to imagine how we communicate the Good News.

The book of Matthew was written to convince Jews that Jesus was the Messiah – the King they had been looking for and longing for. They did not see him that way because he did not come like any other king had come before. One became a King by lineage or power. Jesus’s kingship and kingdom ways resembled none of the kingdoms that had come before him or existed in his day. It was an upside down kingdom and as such was rejected by many but some came to realize the radical nature of what Jesus was ushering in and embraced this kingdom as the one that led to true freedom, prosperity, and life.
