We see how God calls special attention to His servants and causes them to rise to the top in stressful situations. As His servants -- people saved by Grace -- we are not our own and whatever happens to us is an opportunity for us to enjoy God and glorify Him before others. This story shows how the Apostle Paul lived out this conviction in extraordinary circumstances, and how God repeatedly showed that He was in charge of Paul's life. Continuing our Flannelgraph Faith sermon series, Pastor Josh turns our attention to the healing of a paralytic in Mark 2:1-11. This passage paints such a beautiful picture of friendship, faith, and forgiveness. In fact, the physical healing of the paralytic is not even the primary theme of the story; rather, it's only a byproduct of the deeper, invisible miracles taking place. Sometimes the most shocking thing about the Gospel is how cold a reception it gets in this world. When people reject the good news of Salvation, it's nothing less than tragic. However, what's even more shocking and tragic is when people who claim to be transformed by the gospel refuse to share it with others - standing in selfish judgment over others even though they, themselves, are pardoned criminals at heart. God is lavishly generous with his gift of salvation, we need to catch up and join him in his compassion and mercy. When we read Naaman’s story in 2 Kings, we are often drawn toward the miraculous healing that takes place in his life. Yet, the implications of this story are much deeper than a simple story of healing. God cuts deep into Naaman’s heart, and challenges us to this level of obedience in our lives. Continuing in our series, “Flannelgraph Faith,” we encounter this remarkable story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal, which reveals God’s passion to glorify His name, reveal His salvation, and expose false idols when his people will stand in faith and courage!

The Bible certainly has verses that praise the wisdom of planning and preparation. However, as the Bible describes amazing miracles and movements of God, we tend to see less human calculation and more reliance on prayer. We read less about strategic steps and more about risky faith. While both planning and spontaneity need to be balanced, God's glory stands out best when our abilities and plans are weak and we're left to rely on Him alone.

This week, we welcomed Guest Speaker, Rev. John Span, Vice President of the Alexandria School of Theology in Cairo, Egypt, and he brings us to Acts 14 where we explore Paul's motivation for continuing in sharing the Gospel despite uncomfortable (and often painful) circumstances. Ultimately, we can see through this passage the worthiness of Jesus motivates zeal for the Gospel, even in places outside our comfort zone.

Our ability to communicate is distinct in all of creation, and gives us an amazing power to rule and subdue. In fact, language and its ability to unite are some of the most obvious manifestations of the divine image we bear. In week 2 of our sermon series, "Flannelgraph Faith," we explore the story of Babel - observing that when the goal is pride and self-worship, God is willing to dismantle our unity.
