Elders are imprisoned for 6 ½ months then go home feeling they didn’t do much on their mission. One of their few converts, a fellow inmate, was the great grandfather of President Russell M. Nelson. The Lord’s work shall roll forth, and none can stop it. Resistance is expected, and experienced by all of us, but in the end is futile. Well might man stretch forth his puny arm to stop a river as to hinder the Almighty. This work shall roll forth until the glorious return of Savior Jesus Christ. The Lord watches over all His children, but I believe there are extra angels assigned to watch over His missionaries.

This episode should be a movie. Leaving Council Bluffs in 1846 William Staines was asked to migrate with the Ponca Indian Tribe through their winter hunting grounds. He suffered from loneliness, scurvy, boils and all manner of afflictions during those 6 months. The Poncas treated him with respect and dignity. He was instrumental in shaping many Indian tribe’s perspectives and attitudes toward the LDS people. During his solitary winter he witnessed a way of life that has long since been forgotten. As he neared death several times, he put his life in the hands of the Lord and accomplished much more than he could ever have dreamed. What an amazing life journey.

This is an amazing story: A 10 year-old boy of royal Danish descent is injured and crippled for life. No one thought could live. In his youth he received a vision of his pre-mortal life and knew he had chosen his mortal journey.. He led an amazing life as a cripple. Miracles attended his painful labored existence as he left his native land and came to Zion. His appearance repulsed those who saw him, this caused him emotional pain. He quietly suffered through emotional and physicalpain and humiliation his entire life. As he labored in the newly opened Temples in Utah, he came to his own. Niels Eskildz was the old, crippled giant of Salt Lake.

Many people have been to the Spirit World, then returned to tell the rest of us what they experienced. They have immediate understanding of a spiritual world that surrounds and interacts with this mortal sphere. Our loved ones are near trying to help and inspire us. We have a work to perform on this side of the veil, but that work can intensify and continue on the other side. Thousands of more souls will be gathered into the House of Israel on the other side than here.

Marriner Wood Merrill's mother was one of the first people to be baptized outside of the USA in Sackville New Brunswick. As a young man Marriner had a visionary dream where he saw Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, the migration of the Saints to the Great Basin. He saw himself settling this vast frontier and having several families. Divine intervention preserved him on more than one occasion. His work ethic and determination directed him to become a pioneer, and industrialist in the early settlements of the Saints. His posterity is now one of the largest lines in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
