Even before the pandemic began, the United States was in the throes of a widespread housing crisis. We discuss the current situation, the inequities inherent to the housing market and the landlord-tenant relationship, and short-term vs. long-term solutions. Mentioned in this episode: Jacobin's article on community land trusts (https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/07/community-land-trusts-clts-problems) Philosophy Tube (https://www.youtube.com/user/thephilosophytube) Please consider supporting the show on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/superpoliticsshow)
This year was another classic example of the eternal debate between trying to achieve power through coy insider politics or doubling down on blunt, bold, vocal activism. We address the myth that this year's advocacy for left and progressive policies somehow hurt the Democrats in this election. And we discuss how, more importantly, if we do not fight for what we believe in - which includes actually vocalizing support for good policies - we will never change our world. We bring on Las Vegas stand-up comedian and leftist Evan Fonfa, host of The Fonzie Scheme show and podcast, along with our mysterious friend "Marcus Absurdius," to discuss and debate messaging strategy for the left.

Bernie Sanders shared a vision of a better society. But now his campaign is over and the two leading options for president are horrible. So what do we do now, and how do we make democratic socialism a reality? Is voting relevant? What good are political groups? The truth is Bernie's presidential campaigns were just the spark for the fire needed to make democratic socialism a reality: before anything is going to happen for us politically, we need to build a mass movement. We need numbers and we need to organize those numbers into a politically powerful force that will continue to grow until it is dominant. We talk strategy with Micah Uetricht, the deputy editor of Jacobin magazine and author of the book Bigger Than Bernie, to talk some ideas on how the democratic socialist movement can build power and eventually run this place.
Check out Micah's book Bigger Than Bernie here, available in both print (https://www.jacobinmag.com/store/product/69) and audiobook (https://www.audible.com/pd/Bigger-Than-Bernie-Audiobook/1696600561).
Also mentioned this episode is Micah's book about the Chicago Teacher's Union, which you can check out here (https://www.versobooks.com/books/1569-strike-for-america).
To get involved in political organizing for the democratic socialist movement, the best place to start is joining the Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA), which you can do right now by clicking here (https://act.dsausa.org/donate/membership2020?akid=s219..BOEwzq).
