After more than 30 years carving my path and building success in a male-dominated industry, I’ve seen and experienced what it takes for women to step into leadership—and just how quickly that strength can be misunderstood.

Sometimes, crossing that line to authenticity comes with backlash, isolation, and criticism that men in similar positions rarely face.

I’ll share some honest stories from my own leadership journey, including moments when I had to make painful decisions that cost me approval—but upheld my integrity and vision. I talk about what it feels like to lose friendships, to be pushed away, or to be singled out online, simply for refusing to play small. I walk through times where I was called intimidating or unapproachable, and how—even when you do your best to lead with grace—there will be people who misunderstand your role, your decisions, and your drive.

More importantly, I want to reframe the whole idea of being a villain. If being a villain means enforcing standards, choosing growth over comfort, or refusing to comply with outdated expectations—maybe we’ve all got a little heroic villain in us. Every superhero disrupts the status quo, and in somebody’s story, that disruption can feel threatening.

But the truth is, leadership isn’t a popularity contest. It’s about responsibility, vision, and integrity—even when it means not everyone will like you. I talk about why we need to stop diluting our own voices just to stay likable, and why being respected—and truly owning your authority—matters so much more.

Of course, I also touch on how important it is to have strong support networks—women who get it, who will listen and share honestly, and help reduce the loneliness that can come with leadership. And I’ll give some real, actionable advice for maintaining your sense of self, prioritizing your mental health, and sustaining your impact in the face of criticism.
