In the 1800’s, the lumber town of Rhinelander, Wisconsin outwardly resembled any other logging town across the US, with one important difference. These early pioneers spent their nights spinning tales of a creature of mythic proportions.
Located in the northern part of the state, in what is termed, the Northwoods, legends of a hideous creature with glowing red eyes, razor sharp teeth, talon filled claws and spiney, dinosaur like protrusions along its back and tail, ran rampant.
It was said this terrifying beast was the unified spirit of the many oxen used in transporting the logs in the area. These angry spirits are said to wreck havoc because of the abuse they suffered at the hands of their owners.
Described as being over 8 feet long and 200 lbs, with the head of a frog, and the grinning face of an elephant, the beast was reportedly responsible for a string of attacks, on Rhinelander residents, as well as many local animals.
Traditions of the beast hold strong in this area but what are the facts of this case?
Could it be another hilarious looking caricature of an actual animal?
Or does it only run free in the minds and imaginations of the people of northern Wisconsin?
