Thursday is the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America. Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, will host its annual 9/11 Stair Climb and Run for the Fallen tomorrow at 7 a.m. Participants will climb the outdoor staircases of a five-story building 13 times to match the number of stairs in the World Trade Center.

Survivors of major natural disasters in the U.S. are having to wait longer to get aid from the federal government, according to a new Associated Press analysis of decades of data. On average, it took less than two weeks for a governor’s request for a major disaster declaration to be granted in the 1990s and early 2000s. That rose to about three weeks during the past decade. According to the AP, it's taking more than a month.

State lawmakers passed a bill earlier this year that creates Tier 5 in the Public Employees' Retirement System, or PERS. Membership in this tier is for new hires starting on March 1 of 2026. Senator Jeremy England told us Tier 5 pushed the retirement requirement from 30 years or service to 35, which has raised concerns for Fire Chiefs.

A Gulfport man is charged with kidnapping, armed carjacking, and armed robbery. 33-year-old Reginald Johnson allegedly asked to test drive a vehicle at a business on Dedeaux Road on Monday morning. During the test drive, he brandished a firearm, kidnapped the employee, and forced the victim to drive to another location. Once they arrived, the suspect stole the victim’s cellphone at gunpoint before forcing the victim out of the vehicle, then fled the scene. Investigators later located the stolen vehicle, and Johnson was taken into custody without incident.

A new Nation's Report Card has been released, and it shows American students are testing at historic lows. Only 31 percent of 8th graders performed at or above proficient in science, only 22 percent of 12th graders performed at or above proficient in math, and only 35 percent of 12th graders performed at or above proficient in reading.

Around 600 women are participating in the Second Annual Women's Summit, which is in its second day in Flowood. The event is hosted by Attorney General Lynn Fitch.

National Geographic will air a docuseries on Tuesday, September 16, that was shot at Naval Air Station Meridian. "Top Guns: The Next Generation" is a six-part series showcasing six months of high-stakes aerial training where only the top performers earn the chance to fly the most coveted aircraft.

Cruisin' the Coast will run from October 5-12. There are more than 8,000 cruisers pre-registered for the event, which is more than 200 more than last year.
