A Batesville woman charged with attempted murder after allegedly planting a homemade bomb outside a person's car is facing new charges. 27-year-old Christina Willis has been in custody since August 4. Willis was originally held in Panola County before being extradited to the Lafayette County Detention Center in Oxford. Now she and her alleged accomplice, Mark Montgomery of Greenville, are charged with conspiracy to escape custody.

Governor Tate Reeves has approved the deployment of approximately 200 Mississippi National Guard soldiers to Washington, D.C. to support President Trump's effort to return law and order to our nation's capital. According to a White House official, the National Guard is not making arrests at this time. Their mission is to protect federal assets and provide a safe environment for law enforcement officers to make arrests.

Animal shelters across southeast Mississippi are battling one of the highest rates of heartworm infection in the country, with Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg reporting that up to 70% of incoming dogs test positive.

A Missouri man has been arrested for allegedly trying to kill a police officer in Columbia on Sunday. Police were responding to a vandalism call on Old Foxworth Road when they were advised of possible squatters at a nearby property. According to Police Chief Adrien Fortenberry, officers spotted a person escaping to the rear of the home when they went to investigate. 32-year-old Daniel Chiodini, of St. Louis, allegedly fired a shot into a police patrol car and fled. Thankfully, the officer wasn't injured.

Two people were injured in a road rage incident in Jones County on Sunday that ended in gunfire. The suspect, 36-year-old Laurel resident Malcolm Lyles, turned himself in for the shooting that occurred just outside the city limits. He's charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and seven European leaders will meet with Trump in Washington, D.C., on Monday to continue seeking an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. A summit between Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Friday ended without a ceasefire.

Hurricane Erin, which is not a threat to Mississippi, moved closer to the U.S. over the weekend. The storm's track has it moving north alongside the East Coast and then out into the Atlantic over the week. We're also monitoring a tropical wave off the coast of Africa that has a 50% chance of development over the next 7 days. This one is on a more southern track than Erin and should reach the Leeward Islands on Friday.
