A Weir man is facing serious charges after leading police on a chase in Starkville early Saturday morning. Officers spotted two vehicles drag racing on Highway 182 just after 1 a.m. on August 2. One of the drivers fled when officers tried to pull them over, but lost control of their vehicle while turning onto University Drive, smashing into an apartment complex near the intersection with Old West Point Road. 20-year-old Jaheim Woodard was taken into custody and charged with felony fleeing, drag racing, and two counts of contributing to the neglect of a minor.

Tropical Storm Dexter formed well off the East Coast on Sunday night and is expected to strengthen over the next few days. Officials expect Dexter to remain out at sea, so it's not a threat to the U.S. Another area of low pressure could form along the old stalled front off the Southeast coast later this week. The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring a tropical wave that's located over western Africa.

Several firefighters were assaulted while responding to a 3-vehicle crash in Copiah County around 12:40 Sunday morning. 18-year-old Ken'Zavion Brown was killed in the collision on Lilly Road, and another individual was airlifted to UMMC. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the assault. Plus, Deputies in Wayne County are investigating a fatal shooting that was discovered over the weekend. A black male was fatally shot while riding a four-wheeler along the side of the road. His body was found lying across the four-wheeler along Sand Bottom Drive around 1:04 a.m. on Sunday, just outside the city limits.

The Trump administration is taking aim at high drug prices. During an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation", Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, says Medicaid will see some change as President Trump's "big, beautiful bill" begins to take effect.

Special elections in 14 districts across Mississippi will begin tomorrow with the primaries. The special elections are the result of a decision by a federal panel of judges who ordered the legislature to redraw its district lines in parts of the state where they ruled Black voting power was diluted.

Several suspects are facing charges after a shootout in Jackson on Saturday. According to police, the shooting between two groups started on Redwood Drive. Both groups were allegedly traveling to a private party at a residence on Sundew Place when the suspects started shooting. Four suspects were arrested, and a fifth suspect was shot and taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The Mississippi Mud Monsters made history over the weekend with the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Brenton Thiels. While Thiels is said to have a pretty good fastball, he’s also seven feet tall. And get this: He’s not the only seven-footer on the Mud Monsters roster. James Boeree, a 7-foot-2 pitcher from Australia, has been with the team since opening day.

A state trooper was injured during a Saturday motorcycle crash and is being treated for his injuries. DPS officials are asking the public for “thoughts and prayers” after Trooper Tavon Moore was involved in a crash on the exit ramp at the intersection of Highway 67 and Highway 605 in Harrison County.
