One suspect is in custody after a police chase through Biloxi on Thursday night. According to law enforcement, the chase began at the intersection of Camellia Street and Highway 90 around 9 p.m. and came to an end near the intersection of McDonnell Avenue and Irish Hill Drive. Plus, a narcotics investigation has led to the arrest of two suspects in Rankin County. Deputies executed a search warrant at a home on Tami Avenue near Richland shortly after noon on Thursday. Barry Tatum Yawn and Dawn Marie Martin were arrested and multiple packages of meth were recovered, as well as a 9mm handgun.

Alcorn State has hired former Florida State assistant Jake Morton to be the university's next head men's basketball coach. This will be his first head coaching job, taking over for Landon Bussie, who resigned to accept the head coaching position at Chicago State University. Plus, four DeSoto County residents have been indicted on welfare fraud charges. The group is accused of fraudulently obtaining more than $130,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs has declared a state of emergency due to rising water levels on the Mississippi River. The River is expected to reach 48 feet. The flood stage in Vicksburg is 43 feet. A flood wall is being installed along areas of the river that are prone to flooding as a precautionary measure.

Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is pushing for an extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which is set to expire in December. The extended Child Tax Credit has helped families with basics like food and school supplies. The 20% pass-through deduction has helped keep family-owned shops and farms afloat. The Senate- and House-passed budget resolutions will serve as a blueprint for congressional committees in coming weeks to work on recommended spending, revenue targets, and deficit reduction goals over the next 10 years.

The MBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Jackson. On Thursday afternoon, a Capitol Police officer was conducting a traffic stop on McDowell Road when a different vehicle pulled up, and an occupant began firing shots. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect, who was still able to flee. When the suspect stopped at the Marathon gas station on South Gallatin Street, he was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget resolution that President Trump has referred to as the big, beautiful bill. Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest told us that House Speaker Mike Johnson has set an ambitious timeline for passage.

The legislation is critical to Trump’s agenda of tax cuts, mass deportations, and a reduction in the size of the federal government.
