A Lafayette County man is charged with first-degree murder. Police found a deceased individual at a home on Heights Drive on March 21 after being called out for a domestic disturbance. The victim was identified as 58-year-old Charlene Cook. 76-year-old Charles Reifers is scheduled to appear before a judge for a bond hearing on Tuesday. Plus, a Jackson firefighter was injured in an apartment fire on Tuesday morning.

Two buildings at an apartment complex on Belvedere Drive were on fire when emergency officials arrived around 3:30 a.m. According to the fire department, there were people in some of the buildings before crews arrived, though the apartments were supposed to be vacant.

Over 800 homes and businesses across 24 counties were damaged in a tornado outbreak on March 14 and 15. State Treasurer David McRae was able to help out tornado victims through the Unclaimed Money program.

The Mississippi Dept of Transportation is working on or overseeing projects along the state's major highways and byways. MDOT Director Brad White told us more about plans for Highway 25 in Flowood and another project on I-55 in Madison County.

Governor Tate Reeves has signed a bill that will restrict panhandling into law. The "Safe Solicitation Act" will give law enforcement recourse when solicitation disturbs the peace. When it goes into effect on July 1, panhandlers who wish to solicit in public spaces must obtain a solicitation permit from their local municipality. Municipalities or county governments can charge up to $25 as a permit fee, though it can also be offered for free.

For the first time in history, both the Ole Miss women’s and men’s basketball teams are heading to the Sweet 16. The Lady Rebels defeated Baylor Saturday by a score of 69 to 63 to advance in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Both teams will be back in action Friday. The women's team will play UCLA, and the men will play Michigan State.

GE Aerospace is planning to invest nearly $1 billion in its U.S. manufacturing sites and suppliers in 2025, and that includes an $11 million investment at their site in Batesville. The investment will be used to improve aircraft engine production, including for military fighter jets.
