The victim of a shooting in Jackson has been identified. 21-year-old Cortez George died of multiple gunshot wounds Saturday afternoon after being shot in the vicinity of Lamar and Pearl Streets. At the time of the incident, thousands of people were still gathered downtown in the aftermath of the city’s annual Hal’s St. Paddy’s Day Parade. Police said another person is in critical condition and a handful of others are injured. As of now, no arrests have been made. Plus, Meridian police are investigating a fatal shooting. Officers were called to the 2000 block of 44th Avenue on Saturday morning around 9:30, where they discovered a man on the porch with gunshot wounds. Investigators are still trying to figure out how long the body of 34-year-old Tommy Turner was outside.

A Louisiana murder suspect was captured on the coast over the weekend. There was an arrest warrant issued for 34-year-old Ian Anthony Seghers in connection with the disappearance of his stepfather. Law enforcement found him hiding in a shed at the property of a family member in Ocean Springs.

The market is jumping higher on news that President Trump is scaling back some of the tariffs on cars, chips, and pharmaceuticals. Reciprocal tariffs are still set to hit on April 2, but Trump has indicated a willingness to negotiate and modify the tariffs with trading partners.

A Jackson County deputy was hit head-on during a police pursuit on Sunday and is expected to be okay. The chase started at the intersection of Highway 90 and Park Road, where police were notified by a Flock Safety camera that a white Porsche in the area was reported as stolen in Texas. When police tried to stop the driver, he sped away, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that ended just outside of Moss Point.

Ocean Springs police charged Phillip Johnson of Lubbock, Texas with possession of stolen property and felony eluding.

Another Mississippian is heading to Hollywood. 26-year-old Jamal Roberts is the latest Magnolia State singer to make it past the opening round of American Idol season 23. Roberts is the second Mississippian to get the golden ticket so far this season, joining Lillie Zitlaly Rhoden, who had fans buzzing with a metal rendition of Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.” Rhoden is also a Meridian native. The show airs Sundays at 7 central on ABC.

At this time, we have confirmation of one tornado that touched down during Sunday’s storms that went into early Monday morning in some parts of the state. In Sharkey County, an EF-1 twister was tracked between Rolling Fork and Grace on Highway 16. This comes a week after Mississippi saw 18 tornadoes travel across the state, killing seven and damaging hundreds of homes.

For the first time in history, both the Ole Miss women’s and men’s basketball teams are heading to the Sweet 16. The Lady Rebels defeated Baylor on the Bears’ homecourt Saturday by a score of 69 to 63 to advance in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Sunday, the Ole Miss men’s team took down Iowa State 91 to 78.

Earlier this month, the Mississippi Dept. of Agriculture and Commerce reported another case of bird flu, marking the third time the disease has been detected in local chicken flocks over the past four months. According to the USDA, several vaccines are available to fight the disease in poultry, but they haven't been authorized for use during the ongoing outbreak. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. doesn't think a vaccine is the answer, and explained why he feels that way.

A Gulfport man has been sentenced to life in prison for a murder in 2022. John William Anderson was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Jeneation Lewis, whose body was found in his car at a gas station at the corner of County Farm Road and Highway 53 with two gunshot wounds to the head.
