Both the House and Senate have passed legislation aimed at squashing DEI programs at state colleges and universities. The bill would force institutions of higher learning receiving taxpayer dollars to shutter DEI offices and bar them from conducting diversity training for staff and students.

Last year, two Biloxi businesses pleaded guilty to selling foreign fish as local seafood. Monday, the House passed a seafood labeling law that would make it illegal for wholesalers, processors, retailers, restaurants, and other food establishments to represent foreign seafood and crawfish as domestic.

A few hours before the Super Bowl kickoff, a VIP player at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino placed a $1 million bet on the game. A standoff with an armed suspect holding a toddler captive in Byhalia ended peacefully Monday afternoon. Law enforcement closed off Highway 309 in Byhalia Monday morning amid an ongoing standoff that began as a domestic disturbance on Sunday night. Casey Henson now faces charges of domestic violence aggravated assault and felon in possession of a firearm, though more charges are possible.

State lawmakers have killed legislation that would have allowed bounty hunters to assist in identifying and reporting illegals. The bill died in Division B of the Judiciary Committee of the House last week.

The man accused of killing former Ole Miss student Jimmie “Jay” Lee is facing an additional charge now that the deceased’s remains have been found. Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington, Jr. is facing a charge of tampering with evidence on top of capital murder in connection with Lee’s now-confirmed death at the time of his next trial. This comes less than a week after human remains found by hunters in Carroll County were reported by the State Crime Lab to belong to Lee, a beloved figure in Oxford’s LGBTQ+ community who had been missing since July 2022.

More than 30 counties and cities in Mississippi already restrict or ban kratom products at the local level. Last week the House passed a bill that would limit Kratom purchases to residents who are 21 or older and ban synthetic kratom products. The bill passed in the house unanimously with a vote of 115-0. It now advances to the Senate.

Multiple rounds of rainfall are expected this morning, and that will continue through Wednesday night. This could lead to flooding in low-lying and urban areas and minor river flooding.

Capitol police are investigating a fatal shooting this morning on Bailey Avenue. An as-yet-unidentified victim was found deceased, with gunshot wounds around 1:20 a.m. At this point, there are no suspects in custody. Plus, one suspect is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting in Bay St. Louis on Sunday. Officers were sent to a home in the 400 block of St. George Street around 9:16 a.m., where they discovered Lionell Bradley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
