Dr. Yaba Blay takes this work seriously. Very seriously. And she creates content that celebrates the beauty and joy and being of Black women and girls decidedly. Purposely.
Dr. Blay -- who holds her BA in Psychology (Cum Laude) from Salisbury State University, M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from the University of New Orleans, M.A. and Ph.D. in African American Studies from Temple University and is currently the Dan Blue Endowed Chair in Political Science at North Carolina Central University -- is the creator behind the beloved new video series Professional Black Girl, airing on YouTube. She is also creator of the social media movement #PrettyPeriod and author of the book (1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race. Her work, as both an academic and as a creative, has always been driven by her love of Black women -- their experiences, their forms of expression and who they be -- and it was informed in large part by her own formative years of soaking up the images of powerful women on Black television shows. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Dr. Blay talks about her passion for inspiring people to think not only in the classroom, but through content, why she considers her self the anti-academic academic, and why radical self care -- and being joyful -- is more important now than ever.
On this episode you'll learn...
How imagery plays an important role in how we see ourselves. Why going to college may not be the move for you.The truth about what that Ph.D. means (and doesn't mean). Why you always get a second chance.Focus on doing the work. The importance of having a team. How to find balance between your work and your world. The truth about trolls. The importance of self care. Why happiness is your birthright.

For Neha Choudhary, her journey to becoming an entrepreneur based in Dubai all led back to one thing: family. After attending college at Northwestern University in Chicago, and then working as an analyst with JP Morgan Chase in Singapore, Neha -- who grew up between Bahrain and Dubai -- eventually returned to Dubai to be near her family. What she also did was leave her corporate job and finally take the leap to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams. The result: Her new video platform, Making Waves, which features video interviews with entrepreneurs in Dubai and which she hopes will shine a light on the burgeoning startup community in the region -- a community that Neha feels is largely ignored by the outside world.
On this episode, Neha talks about the misconceptions about Dubai, misconceptions about women doing business in Dubai, industries that are booming in the region and her mission to let people know that "the Middle East is about more than oil." She also speaks candidly about the challenges of being a solopreneur, and how new entrepreneurs can get through those tough moments that are bound to come.
On this episode you'll learn...
Why perceived risk is more than actual risk. How to handle the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. The importance of your emotional wellness, and allowing yourself down days. How to create a routine for yourself.Finding an offering that doesn't already exist in your market. How to decide the best platform for your business. The kind of videos that work best for business.Realizing that it's ok to fail. The benefits of bringing in a co-founder who has strong points different than yours.

There is a moment within this episode where I talk about how not accepting support has pushed some of us so far that we end up doing things to hurt ourselves..............
There is a long pause after the first time I say this. It shook me up when I vocalized it. I listened to that segment again and again in editing and debated whether I should take it out. When I began wiping tears away, I decided to leave it in.
I began this episode talking about a recent, courageous video that Necole Kane (formerly of NecoleBitchie.com) released where she spoke through tears about struggles she's going through in her business and in her life after making some big moves and transitions, and I share how much I can relate. But know this, this episode is about YOU. I want YOU to get the support you need in all areas of your life -- whatever that looks like. Your job is to stop being resistant, to ask, to accept, and to let support show up for you in all the ways it wants to and in all the ways you need.
To not allow support is selfish. And you are not selfish, you are up to something, you are BIG, you have purpose, and support is there to see you through.
On this episode you'll learn…
The importance of asking for support -- for real! How to face down resistance.Giving up "I got it" syndrome. Why support is sexy for your mental health. Why not asking for support is selfish. Why you must surround yourself with people who push through your resistance.

On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Lauren, co-star of the Oxygen docuseries Quit Your Day Job, talks about how she's handling business, staying ready, taking care of herself, and --what matters to her most -- being a single supermom to her beautiful children.

There lies the genius in Akinah Rahmaan's hit fitness lifestyle brand, Banana Skirt Productions. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast podcast, Akinah talks about the importance of experimentation to discover where your passion lies, having a vision for your business and how you want it to grow and, most important, what she loves most about being a mom.

In January of this year, Doreen Oliver went through a period of her life where she felt "dead inside," like she was not doing what God had put her on this earth to do – create.
With a successful career as a producer of film, television and theater productions, Doreen's life had changed dramatically after she became a wife and mother, with new schedules and the needs of the family, including additional care for one of her sons who has autism. When Doreen realized that she had lost herself, and that she needed to get back to what she loved, she decided it was time to have a few difficult conversations, and to, again, start creating. The result: her widely praised one-woman show, Everything is Fine Until It's Not.
On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Doreen talks about getting back to your goals after motherhood, telling your family the inconvenient truth and having space to create something that's all about you.
On this episode you'll learn:
How to recognize when it's time for a change of pace. The benefits of getting back to your goals after motherhood.Finding that thing that lights you up and is just for you.How to be an advocate for yourself and your needs as a mom.Don't be afraid of inconveniencing those you love.Have realistic expectations for yourself and others.Share your goals with other people – you'll be surprised that support will show up where you least expect it.Why it's important for your children to see you do something that you're passionate about.

What's your ripple?
We all have one. But there are times, right, when we forget that?
Don't.
You MATTER. Your voice MATTERS. The business you're creating MATTERS. The work you're doing MATTERS. The love you show your children, your family and your friends MATTERS.
And you and your work cause a ripple. That infectious something that supports one person, then the next, then the next -- all stemming from what you've put out into the world. You may never know this, and you may have moments when you think what you're doing isn't moving anyone anywhere.
That's why I recorded this episode: to remind you to recognize, respect and remember your ripple.
