We are want to be free, but often we don't know from where true freedom comes. Jesus today teaches that freedom comes only from him. On Reformation Day, we are called not to abuse this freedom and never to let anyone take it away, even if it is the Pope himself.

Our problem isn't with finishing well. Our problem lies in the middle miles where it might start sounding like a good idea to walk or even give up. The Apostle Paul orientes us toward our coronation day in Jesus' name that we might fight like never before and run from start to finish our own race.

We can be forgetful people, especially when it comes to God's Word. The Spirit has given to us a word that is useful...for our whole lives.

Christians can sometimes begin to think that Jesus was a Savior just once, but the Scriptures make clear that Jesus wasn't just a Savior once, but always. There can be no ifs, ands, or buts about his determination to save us.

The spiritual bullies and Simon Cowells of this world can make us pull back and hide like turtles. Through this Word, God calls us to come out from under our rocks to use our spiritual gifts by giving us his Spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.

Today, we run into the Apostle Paul famously writing, "...the love love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." In this sermon, we put this Word of God into context that we might run from the love of money to our Lord powerfully and presently.

It is easy to approach our prayer life like we approach voting. We think that that our "little say" won't result in much change. The gospel speaks a different word. By the power of Jesus' life and innocent death, we have God's ear as his holy saints. So, we pray big, huge prayers expecting him to hear us.

Today begins a new sermon series at Sure Foundation. We are looking at the Pastoral Epistles. It is high time to consider and rejoice in the gospel message handed down to us from the apostles. It is time for the Essential Gospel.
