The ‘strong black woman’ stereotype is harming our mental health.

We live in a world of stereotypes.  Here’s one of them: Black women have attitude, take any guff from anyone and are always strong. No one is always strong. People have weak moments. Bad things happen in life, and we all experience tragedies. 

So when an African-American woman is struggling grief and loss - how is her healing journey different, than that, of her Caucasian counterpart. My guest Rev. Dr. Brooke Brimm will discuss the cultural grief of Black Women.

Dr. Jasmine M. Hamilton is currently an Assistant Professor in the Health and Kinesiology Department at Prairie View A&M University.  She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and Assessment Coordinator to the College of Education has become an intricate part of her duties.  Her research interests include socio-cultural issues, social identity, and social capital within physical activity, sport, and physical education. Dr. Hamilton received her undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana, Master's degree from Sam Houston State University, and doctorate in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University. She is the mother of one daughter.

Keshia Shelby joined the Lane College Athletics Department as the Director of Athletic Compliance in August 2019. As Director of Compliance, she is responsible for overseeing student-athlete eligibility and the education, monitoring, and enforcement of the college's compliance with all NCAA and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) rules and regulations. Ms. Shelby will also serve as a member of the senior athletics administration as the Assistant Athletic Director.

Donnita Drain-Rogers graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in December of 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education and an endorsement in Biology. She obtained her Master’s degree in Education Administration at Texas A & M University of Commerce, Texas. While attending Northwestern, she obtained such honors as NAIA National Player of the Week, OIC Scholar Athlete, OIC and District IX All-Conference Teams and Northwestern Ranger Queen in 1988. Rogers was inducted into Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 1998. Rogers served four years as Athletic Director for Women’s Sports and was selected as Athletic Director of the Year for Region VI in 2003.
