Suspense #639, "The Diary of Captain Scott," presents the harrowing true account of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's doomed Antarctic expedition. Devastated but determined, the five men face an 800-mile trek back to their ship in temperatures plunging to 30 degrees below zero. As Scott records in his diary, the journey becomes a desperate race against starvation, frostbite, and the brutal Antarctic elements.

The expedition quickly deteriorates as supplies dwindle and the men suffer from snow blindness, frozen limbs, and disorientation. Evans, his hands and face badly blistered, grows increasingly weak and delirious. Despite Scott's encouragement and the team's efforts to keep moving toward their supply camps, the crushing cold and exhaustion take their toll. Each diary entry reveals mounting desperation as the men struggle to pull their sledge through impossible conditions, knowing that every delay brings them closer to catastrophe.

In Suspense #638, "Hollywood Hostages," location scout Tommy Brown and photographer Eve McVeigh arrive at a deserted ghost town called Powderville, 180 miles from Hollywood, to scout locations for a new picture. Tommy, a veteran of director Murphy's notorious practical jokes, warns Eve about their boss's twisted sense of humor. When a mysterious man appears in one of Eve's photographs and steals their car, stranding them in the desert, Tommy is convinced it's just another elaborate Murphy prank. However, things take a darker turn when they seek shelter from an approaching rainstorm in the hotel and discover a wounded man bleeding on the floor.

Tommy remains skeptical, insisting the injured man is another planted actor using ketchup for blood, but Eve isn't so sure. As they wait on the hotel porch in the rain, the line between elaborate joke and genuine danger becomes increasingly blurred. When another car finally approaches through the storm, they hope for rescue, but in this isolated ghost town where nothing is as it seems, the real question becomes whether they've stumbled into a deadly situation that has nothing to do with Hollywood pranks at all.

Comrade Stepan, one of his inquisitors, later visits Yinrik and his fiancée Milana at home, delivering a chilling ultimatum that makes clear the young man's time is running out. The couple realizes they have no future under the oppressive regime that has already claimed other students who dared to think freely.

Desperate and out of options, Yinrik and Milana make a fateful decision: they will attempt to escape to freedom together, undertaking the dangerous 300-mile journey to the border. Armed with only candy bars, determination, and small bottles of poison in case of capture, the young lovers set out on foot through a countryside filled with guards, informers, and patrol dogs. As they make their way from Prague toward the border, exhausted and hunted, their love and courage are tested at every turn.

Suspense #636, "Variations on a Theme," Herman Milford has finally had enough of his nagging wife Joe after twenty years of marriage, and he's spent five years meticulously planning the perfect murder. On what should be a routine Tuesday morning as the couple prepares to leave for their cabin at Piney Crest, Herman executes his plan with chilling precision. He knocks Joe unconscious, binds and gags her with electrical tape, and stuffs her into a heavy metal trunk. His scheme is elegantly simple: ship the trunk to their remote cabin, then take his still-living wife out to the middle of the bottomless lake and send her to a watery grave where no one will ever find her body.

However, Herman's carefully orchestrated plan begins to unravel almost immediately. When the expressman's truck breaks down and neighbors like the chatty Louise start asking questions about Joe's whereabouts, Herman finds himself improvising desperately to keep his story straight. As the minutes tick by and complications mount, Herman must maintain his composure while his trapped wife remains sealed in the trunk, aware of her fate and waiting for rescue or doom.

Suspense #635, "Arctic Rescue," opens with a harrowing scene: on Christmas night, somewhere near the 73rd parallel north of the Arctic Circle, two men lie stranded on a desolate ice flow. First mate Gerald Stewart finds himself helpless beside the unconscious Captain Jonathan Blake, both waiting for what seems like certain death. Through Stewart's narration, the story flashes back to the previous June, when their ship, the Jessica, departed New York on a noble mission. Commissioned by Lady Franklin, Captain Blake and his crew set out to discover the fate of her husband, Sir John Franklin, and his two ships, the Erebus and Terror, which vanished years earlier while searching for the Northwest Passage. As the Jessica ventures into uncharted Arctic waters, guided by ice pilot Patrick Hansen, the crew faces the daunting reality of their mission.

The expedition pushes into the frozen wilderness with the desperate hope of finding answers and returning by Christmas. However, Hansen's warnings about the perils of Arctic ice and the dangers of being frozen in during winter hang ominously over the voyage, setting the stage for the disaster that leaves Stewart and Blake stranded on the ice.

Suspense #634, "The Cellar Door," presents a parent's worst nightmare in this taut domestic thriller. Joe and Anne are enjoying a quiet Sunday at home with their precocious toddler Sandy, who isn't quite two years old. While Anne prepares to give Sandy his bath, Joe heads down to the basement to drain the water heater. When Anne comes partway down the cellar stairs to hand Joe a pair of pliers, disaster strikes: the cellar door swings shut and locks behind her, trapping both parents in the basement. Upstairs, little Sandy is alone in a house filled with dangers - a bathtub running with water, a flame burning on the stove, and an unlocked screen door leading to the street.

As Joe frantically tries to break through the locked door with only a screwdriver and pliers, Anne calls desperately to Sandy through the door, trying to keep track of him and guide him to safety. The parents' terror mounts as sounds from upstairs suggest the child is moving around the house, and ominous silence alternates with the splash of water. Their only hope is to somehow coach the toddler into turning the doorknob and releasing them before tragedy strikes.
