  • Ordeal in Donner Pass

    Originally Aired: November 2, 1953

Suspense #524, "Ordeal in Donner Pass," presents the harrowing true story of the infamous Donner Party, trapped in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the brutal winter of 1846-47. Patrick Breen, a God-fearing family man, serves as narrator and diarist, documenting the steadily worsening conditions as the wagon party faces a deadly choice. Despite Mr. Eddie's desperate pleas to attempt crossing the mountain pass before winter sets in, the exhausted settlers vote to stay and wait for spring. Mr. Donner, Mr. Graves, and the other families believe their children need rest and that the treacherous conditions make travel impossible. The decision proves catastrophic.

As November turns to December, relentless snowfall buries the camp under five to six feet of snow. The families slaughter their remaining oxen and take shelter in crude cabins, completely cut off from one another. When an eight-day blizzard finally breaks, they discover their pack animals have disappeared beneath the snow. With supplies dwindling and death claiming its first victim, Bayless Williams, the settlers face starvation. Mrs. Reed pleads for food while Breen grimly rations what little oxmeat remains, knowing the worst ordeal still lies ahead.

  • Dutch Schultz

    Originally Aired: October 26, 1953

Suspense #523, "Dutch Schultz," brings the violent world of 1930s organized crime to life as Broderick Crawford portrays the notorious gangster Dutch Schultz. When Ginch, one of Schultz's men, learns that the major New York crime bosses—Harry, Lepke, Lucky, Albert, and others—are meeting without the Dutchman's knowledge, tensions immediately flare. Schultz crashes the syndicate meeting, where the bosses are discussing what to do about an incorruptible new man in the District Attorney's office who's investigating their numbers rackets. While the other crime lords want to handle the situation with what Harry calls "a modicum of intelligence," the hot-headed Schultz has his own brutal ideas about dealing with problems.

Back in Newark, Schultz runs his numbers operation with the help of mathematical genius Abadabba Berman, who has rigged the system so players rarely win. Feeling disrespected by the New York syndicate and convinced of his own superiority, the volatile gangster grows increasingly dangerous. As Schultz's paranoia and violent impulses escalate, his loyal men Ginch and Abadabba find themselves caught between their unpredictable boss and the powerful forces gathering against him.

While others their age succumb to gradual decay, Bill envisions a different path. He tells Tillett about a recurring dream of climbing an increasingly impossible crag, and reveals his radical plan: to test the limits of human capability when the fear of death is removed. He intends to attempt the Zenal, a treacherous ridge of the Vicehorn in the Alps.

Despite Tillett's quiet objections and understanding sympathy, Bill cannot be dissuaded. Ten days later, he arrives at Zanal and reunites with Gaspar, an old guide who has accompanied him on many climbs during happier July expeditions. Now, in the dangerous late season with snow approaching, Bill prepares to undertake the west face—a climb that will push beyond the normal margin of safety that keeps mountaineers alive.

    Originally Aired: September 21, 1953

Suspense #518, "The Empty Chair," stars Agnes Moorhead as Barbara Warner, a new high school teacher who takes up residence with her student Bobby Morrison and his anxious mother. After school, Bobby drives his teacher home in his prized car, a vehicle he built himself, speeding through residential streets at nearly seventy miles per hour despite the traffic safety lessons he learned in driver education class. Miss Warner's concerns about Bobby's reckless driving prove well-founded when she overhears a heated argument between the seventeen-year-old and his struggling single mother.

Mrs. Morrison confides her worries about her son to the young teacher, revealing how Bobby has grown wild and uncontrollable. Miss Warner mentions Mr. Douglas, the school's driver education teacher who works with troubled students like Bobby, but before she can elaborate, young David Cooper arrives looking for his friend. • A Vision of Death

    Originally Aired: June 1, 1953

Suspense #515, "A Vision of Death," stars Ronald Colman as Judd, a nightclub mentalist who performs a seemingly flawless telepathy act with his wife Aurora. While giving his statement at a police precinct regarding a murder charge, Judd explains how their successful mind-reading routine works through an elaborate system of verbal cues disguised as casual patter with the audience. For years, he and Aurora have lived well off their deception, working fifty weeks a year at top wages. Their only friction comes from Aurora's contempt for their agent Harry Arnold, though Judd keeps the peace between them.

Everything changes one night at the Grove when Aurora begins correctly identifying objects before Judd can deliver his coded signals. Terrified by this genuine telepathic phenomenon, Judd desperately searches for a rational explanation. He convinces himself and Aurora that after working together so long, she simply anticipates his cues through subtle inflections and movements. But as Judd continues his confession to the Lieutenant, the question looms: what does this newfound ability have to do with murder, and how does a vision of death fit into their once-perfect act?
