  • 33| Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and the other forgotten Rs (Radio Ep 002)

We’ve all heard that slogan, right?  “Reduce, reuse, recycle”. These are known as the 3R’s of waste management or sustainability, but there are several more Rs that can be considered when trying to limit your waste and avoid sending unnecessary trash to the landfill. Although there isn’t a formal consensus on which Rs are the true frontrunners of sustainability, or even how many should be included, I’ve chosen 8Rs that I think should be considered in an eco-friendly lifestyle.

  • 32| Starting a Sustainable Lifestyle - Tips from Women of Color (Radio Ep 001)

Sustainable Brown Girl is now being played on a local radio station in Newnan, GA. In the first episode airing this week, we're talking about how to be more sustainable everyday. I've incorporated clips from the first two seasons of the podcast in which I asked guests how anyone can be more sustainable. So much valuable information was shared that I made an entire episode to help people just starting on their eco-friendly journey.

  • 31| Effects of climate change on communities of color & how to make a difference with Jasmine Sanders

When I think about the impending doom that climate change will inevitably bring in the coming years, and the effects that we have already begun to see, it makes me nervous. Individual action is great, but climate change needs to be addressed on a mass scale. We need people educating the public and pressuring politicians to enact sustainable policies. And today's featured sustainable brown girl is doing just that.

Jasmine Sanders (@jazzyclimate is a climate scientist, strategist and advocate. She is the Executive Director of Our Climate, which is a climate change advocacy organization that uplifts young people to make a global impact on a grassroots level. Jasmine strives to raise awareness to the intersecting effects of climate change and the communities of color who are disproportionately affected.

  • 30| Creating a Business in Circular Fashion with Wear Em Out Tees & Designer Accessory Adoption

You may have heard the term fast fashion, which refers to the design, manufacturing and marketing of rapidly produced high volumes of clothing, usually made with low quality materials and sold for a cheap price. This method of fashion encourages quick turnover of clothing which produces more textile waste, pollution, and unsafe work environments for garment workers.

It's estimated that Americans generate 16 million tons of textile waste per year, about 85% of which is sent to landfill or incinerated.

Clothes donated to thrift stores and charity shops will often send unwanted clothing overseas, usually to East African  and Southeast Asian countries. When these countries receive such large amounts of secondhand garments, it reduces the demand for locally made clothing, which is harmful to their economy,

So, what can we do to prevent clothing waste? Well, to start, we can reduce the amount of clothing that we are purchasing. Opt to buy clothing that has a classic design that can be worn for many years. Take better care of your clothing - wash them less and repair any defects that happen from normal wear and tear. Shop secondhand when you do need a new item of clothing. Or if shop with companies that use recycled materials or are environmentally aware when creating new garments. When a piece of clothing has reached the end of it's life or you no longer need it, if it's in good condition, donate to someone who will give it new life, recycle it responsibly or reuse it in some way around your home. And that is what we call circular fashion.

In todays episode, we're talking with two sustainable brown girls who have created businesses in circular fashion by repurposing and reselling unwanted clothing and accessories.

Our first guest is Camille Lee, the owner of Wear Em Out Tees, an online shop selling upcycled t-shirts for the environmentally conscious consumer. The brand is all about pre-loved fashion, landfill diversion and circular fashion.

Our second guest is Endia Henry, owner of Designer Accessory Adoption, an online boutique for pre-owned designer items. Through her shop and providing style advice, Endia's mission is to make high quality luxury and contemporary accessories attainable for more people.

We'll be talking to each sustainable brown girl about how and why they started their business around circular fashion.

  • 29| Pros and Cons of Purchasing an Electric Vehicle with Brittany Idleburg of Live Life Electrified

According to Earthjustice.org, transportation is the largest source of climate pollution in the US. Gas vehicles release air pollutants and emissions that not only harm the environment, but also are detrimental to our health by causing asthma, bronchitis and cancer. The best solution to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles is to shift to electric.

When we think of electric vehicles, Tesla is probably the first that comes to mind. However, more and more electric options are entering the market on a frequent basis. And it's not just limited to cars. California is aiming to transition to 100% electric public buses by 2040, and in 2019 the first electric fire truck was introduced.

But, everything comes at a cost. Not just financially, but also environmentally. In the manufacturing process, electric vehicles will produce more global warming emissions than the average gasoline vehicle, because electric cars’ large lithium-ion batteries require a lot of materials and energy to build. However, electric vehicles make up for their higher manufacturing emissions within eighteen months of driving — and continue to outperform gasoline cars until the end of their lives. So in the long run, electric does come out on top.

And as for the perceived higher price tag... well, electric isn't necessarily more expensive. There are plenty of affordable options for those of us on a budget.

In this episode we'll be talking all about electric vehicles with Brittany Idleburg, the creator behind the Live Life Electrified blog. In 2017, Brittany and her husband bought their first electric vehicle, a Tesla Model S. Since then, Brittany has begun sharing her experience as an EV owner while dispelling myths about electric vehicles and encouraging others to go electric.

  • 27| Combatting Eco-Anxiety with Alejandra Dueñas, a Holistic Health Coach

As you may have noticed from listening to a few episodes of this podcast, I try to keep the topics light because sustainability and environmentalism can be very heavy and it’s easy to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders with all of the information that we have access to about the state of the environment. So while we do discuss topics that are serious, I always try to end on a lighter note, and that’s exactly what we’re doing today.

Being in the environmental space and understanding the implications of our everyday habits, as well as the 100 corporations that contribute 71% of global emissions, that knowledge can weigh heavily on us. As important as it is for us to advocate for the planet, it’s also important for us to take care of ourselves and our mental health.

Alejandra Dueñas is a Peruvian native living in Colorado. She is a holistic life coach with over 10 years of experience in the topic of self-growth, self-development, and spirituality. Alejandra is the founder of the signature life coaching program, the 3C's Method, a program aimed at helping women heal from trauma, toxic patterns, and mental/emotional wounds in order to take back control of their lives with consistency and control. Alejandra's mission is to elevate human consciousness through the process of healing mental addiction, living in the present moment, and tapping into your soul's purpose. We'll be talking to Alejandra about how to combat eco-anxiety when you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders.

    • 26| Advocating for Prison Reform through Sustainable Fashion with Kimberly McGlonn, Grant Blvd Founder

Sustainability is not just about what we can do for the planet, it's also about what we can do for the humans living on it. Many brands claim to care about social justice issues, but few actually incorporate it into their mission. What we love about today's guest is that not only is she creating a sustainable fashion brand, but she also uses her platform to advocate for prison reform.

Today's featured sustainable brown girl is Kimberly McGlonn, founder of Grant Blvd, a sustainable apparel brand. Kimberly is a defender of civil and human rights, which is supported by Grant Blvd's mission to make clothes that are stylish, while centering on an approach to design within the fight for justice and reform.

In the sustainability community, we often talk about the effects of climate change, particularly on the earth's oceans.  As temperatures rise, so will sea levels. As we continue to rely on massive plastic production, there will soon be more plastic in the ocean than fish.  Protecting and preserving our seas is more important than ever.

In this week's podcast episode, I chat with Lashanti Jupp, a marine conservationist who was born and raised in the Bahamas. As a recent graduate of University of Cambridge with a Masters of Philosophy in Conservation Leadership, she gained a true passion for empowering local communities through science communication and uses her web series, Siren Sundays, to raise awareness about conservation challenges in the environment for everyday people.

Tune in as we talk about what it means to be a marine conservationist and how we can all help protect our oceans.
