      • FOUR MODES OF PRACTICE & FOUR IMMEASURABLES - Unlocking the Doorways to Nibbāna

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

It's stated that "there are four ways of practice. What four? Painful practice with slow realisation, painful practice with quick realisation, pleasant practice with slow realisation, and pleasant practice with quick realisation" in the Saṁkhitta Sutta (AN 4.161)

We will examine what these Profitable Directions are, the importance of learning about these four modes of practice, how we develop these insight pathways that lead to the four immeasurable states (i.e. Buddha's medicine for overcoming the craving for the four nutriments), how the 37 enlightenment factors are activated and support the Path, and an overview of how we meditate or contemplate towards unlocking the doors to Nibbāna.

        • — familiarise ourselves with pali terms and their meanings to make the learning process easier
        • — how these insight pathways unlock the doorways to Nibbāna

          • "KEY INFLECTION POINTS" IN PAINFUL PRACTICE WITH SLOW REALISATION

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is another session to help with the learning and development of the Painful Practice with Slow Realisation (First Doorway to Nibbāna). We look at six key "inflection points" in the meditation as a means to addressing:

            • questions that have arisen,
            • potential blocks in the meditation, and
            • subtle nuances in understanding the insight pathway
            • Bohoma pin to all the people who have asked different questions on this meditation.

            • Guided Meditation - TUNING INTO GOODNESS

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is a SHORT GUIDED MEDITATION with the theme of TUNING INTO GOODNESS. In this meditation, we tap into our own acts of generosity and kindness to lift the mind.

We can rejoice in our own goodness, as well as the goodness of others (including the noble ones). We are connecting to the field of merit and goodness.

It's good to do this meditation frequently as it nurtures wholesome qualities, goes against the hindrances & defilements, and encourages letting go.

            • 1.0 INTRODUCTION TO THE BUDDHA'S GRADUAL INSTRUCTIONS TO LAY PEOPLE (YOUTH DHAMMA SESSION)

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is the introductory talk for a new series, specifically for our younger audience, looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions (anupubbiṁ kathaṁ) for lay people.

The question commonly asked by audiences, both young or older, is why did the Buddha give these specific gradual instructions or teachings to lay people? And what are those teachings in more detail?

In this brief introductory talk we look at what the Buddha means by gradual instructions, the objectives in teaching lay people in this way, the important of this sequential process, and what to expect in this Youth Dhamma Series.

In future sessions we will go step-by-step, following the Buddha's instructions and look at:

              • (1) talk on giving (dānakathaṁ)
              • (2) talk on virtue (sīlakathaṁ)
              • (3) talk on the heavens (saggakathaṁ)
              • (4) talk on the danger, degradation, and defilement in sensual pleasures (kāmānaṁ ādīnavaṁ okāraṁ saṅkilesaṁ)
              • (5) talk on the blessing of renunciation (nekkhamme ānisaṁsaṁ), and only then
              • (6) talk on the Four Noble Truths
              • Bohoma pin to the people who have asked this question over the past few months. There have been quite a few, so much merit to you.

              • Why we must choose our role models wisely...

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

A gentle encouragement to revisit and review who we take as our role models. Are they in support of the non-greed, non-hatred, non-delusion path? Are their actions and speech leaning towards freedom from all suffering? Are they encouraging us towards Nibbana, or tying us to samsara? Do they have Right View?

We must choose our role models wisely in order to find support to walk the Noble Eightfold Path. And this is why we study the monks, nuns and lay disciples from the time of the Buddha, those who have developed the noble qualities, and realised Path and Fruit. They are safe examples of guiding standards for noble living and practising the Path.

              • MEDITATION ON FOUR NUTRIMENT SUFFERING - Part 6

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

We continue with our examination of "all sentient beings are sustained by nutriment" (sabbe sattā āhāraṭṭhitikā) in the Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33)  In this session (PART 6), we learn how to meditate on the Four Nutriments and Suffering.

All the nutriments are linked (work in tandem, or altogether - process happens very quickly), so we build on what we covered in the past five sessions.

**It is helpful you have at least a broad understanding of each of the Four Nutriments, why we crave them, what is driving the insight pathways and why we go the wrong way in each of them. It's also beneficial if you are familiar with the "swinging monkey" analogy we went through in Part 4 - Mental Volition as Nutriment (3rd Unprofitable Direction)**

In this short session, we explain the meditation steps using the Four Nutriments & Four Wrong Ways Table, and go through 2 examples to help us to apply this meditation. When you do this meditation, take an example that is relevant to you so you can connect with this Dhamma more directly.

              • CONSCIOUSNESS AS NUTRIMENT & GOING THE WRONG WAY DUE TO DELUSION - Part 5 - The Fourth Unprofitable Direction

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

We continue with our examination of "all sentient beings are sustained by nutriment" (sabbe sattā āhāraṭṭhitikā) in the Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33)  In this session (PART 5), we will examine the Fourth Unprofitable Direction how we go the Wrong Way due to Delusion (mohaagatigamanaṃ) when we crave Consciousness as Nutriment (viññānāhāro).

All the nutriments are linked, so we build on what we covered in the session on the Physical Nutriment and Going the Wrong Way due to Desire, Contact as Nutriment and Going the Wrong Way due to Hate and Mental Volition as Nutriment and Going the Wrong Way due to Fear.

What we cover in this session:

                • — look at how craving for Consciousness  as Nutriment activates dependent origination
                • — highlight the importance of understanding name-and-form
                • — go line by line to understand the process of how we go the wrong way due to delusion driven by ignorance and supported by the perversions
                • — examine how volitional formations get constructed, they shatter, and we continually lament when we don't get what we want. And this demonstrates the relationship between volitional formations and consciousness.
                • — apply the "swinging monkey" analogy to understand this Dhamma
                • — revisit the Buddha's simile of the criminal being punished by the king
                • — go through some examples of this process
                • — tips for learning and developing this meditation

Most of the suttas that are directly or indirectly referred to in this session:

                • — Āhāra Sutta (SN 12.11)
