  • WHY IT'S DIFFICULT TO RENUNCIATE THE WORLD (FULL DHAMMA SESSION, Poya)

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

This is the FULL DHAMMA SESSION conducted on ILL POYA (18 November 2021) via zoom on "WHY IT'S DIFFICULT TO RENUNCIATE THE WORLD", how to contemplate the Hāliddikāni Sutta (SN 22.3)

This is a teaching to lay people, with Venerable Mahākaccāna elaborating on the Buddha's verse:

"Having left home to roam without abode,

    In the village the sage is intimate with none;
Rid of sensual pleasures, without expectations,
He would not engage people in dispute"

A very important teaching about the importance of not making a home for consciousness to establish and not roaming with our sense faculties to construct (and reconstruct) the world, with some very practical application.

This Dhamma session consolidates and expands on many of the instructions, insight pathways and meditations we have studied over the past few poya and other Dhamma sessions.

            • 3.5 HOW CAN WE LIVE WITH EASE? (YOUTH DHAMMA SESSION)

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

Another session to accompany the second module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on VIRTUE (sīlakathaṁ)

In this additional episode, we look at the question of HOW WE CAN LIVE WITH EASE (or comfort)? What we learn from the Buddha's teachings to lay people and the monastic Sangha, is the importance placed on virtue or moral agreements. They help to create fondness, kindness and respect towards each other and support harmony, inclusion, non-dispute and unity in how we live with each other. This in turn means we live with more trust, and less fear and hatred.

The Buddha's words inspire us to empower ourselves to create a more easeful or comfortable life established on virtue - that can spread to those around us, people we live with, study with, work with and more.

What would the world be like if we all lived by the five precepts?

What would the world be like if we were more generous and less stingy?

Some of the suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session:

              • — Phāsuvihāra Sutta (AN 5.105)
              • — Dutiyasāraṇīya Sutta (AN 6.12)

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

Another session to accompany the second module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on VIRTUE (sīlakathaṁ)

In this session, we do a guided meditation together - recollecting how we keep good virtue or maintain integrity through the five precepts. We reflect by keeping our virtue wholesome and upright we offer safety, non-ill will and non-harm to others. And we keep company with the Noble Ones who walk the Buddha's Path.

                  This meditation is particularly helpful

                  • - when we feel low in mind energy
                  • - when the conditions appear challenging
                  • - when we feel we need protection and safety
                  • - when we need to study or sit for exams
                  • - when we want to improve our memory and retention
                  • - when we need to face challenges at work, home and in the community
                  • **It will help lift the mind, brighten it, make it happy and safe - so the mind can concentrate more easily, focus, and retain what's needed to be retained.**

We can apply this meditation as we go about our daily lives and in all postures (sitting, walking, standing, wakefully lying down)

**PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS RECOMMENDED for much younger children for this Dhamma talk**

Another session to accompany the second module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on VIRTUE (sīlakathaṁ)

In this additional episode, we look at THE STORY OF CUNDA, THE PORK BUTCHER. This is an important session, though it may not be a comfortable topic to think about. If taken in the correct way, with the Buddha as our teacher and his words to guide us, there is much we can learn.

                    In this session we examine:

                    • — Cunda's story and the pain and suffering he experienced as a result of cruelty, harm and unskilful livelihood
                    • — when a person torments others and pursues the practice of torturing others - they cultivate unskilful actions, hobbies and livelihood
                    • — whether we truly understand inflicting pain and death
                    • — the importance of protecting our minds when we use different devices, mediums and modalities for entertainment and other activities
                    • — the Simile of the Roof to remind ourselves of protecting our minds, not allowing it become corrupt and therefore, not to get rotten.
                    • Some of the suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session:

                      • — Cundasūkarikavatthu (Dhp 15)

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

Another session to accompany the second module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on VIRTUE (sīlakathaṁ)

In this additional episode, we look at VIRTUE AS A FACTOR OF STREAM ENTRY. When it comes to the mundane path, virtue plays a key part in rebirth in a good destination as a result of merit-making and good conduct. However, on the supramundane path, virtue is only part of what helps us to walk the Noble Eightfold Path, which is the way out of all suffering.

                        In this session we examine

                        • — why it's important to enter the stream and one of the Buddha's similes to explain that
                        • — how virtue helps us to slant, slope and incline towards liberation
                        • — "virtue dear to the noble ones" (ariyakantehi sīlehi) as a factor of stream entry and explain a little of what the Buddha teaches on this and how to develop it
                        • — and link to our "Metta School" meditation
                        • — how we purify our conduct and look at the Simile of Heartwood to understand where virtue fits into developing our Path and Practice.
